Droitwich Spa Mens 4s entertained Sutton Coldfield in their first home league
game of the season.
Droitwich started off confidently following the side impressive display in Solihull
last week. Defence marshalled by Lloyd coped adequately with Sutton forays,
with Thom and Connor breaking up the play and getting forward at any
opportunity. Droitwich created chance down the right and left flanks with Wayne
and Mike just missing the target after good approach work from James and
Mathew. Sutton began to get the measure of Droitwich with their older front
players holding the ball up to bring the youngsters to the fore, which resulted in a
goal from a well worked penalty corner routine. Sutton struggled to get a clean
shot away as the defence blocked and baulked unsettling their penalty corner
routines.
The 2
nd
half saw Droitwich push James Hancher into the middle to nullify the
Sutton threat. This enabled the wing backs to get further forward, resulting in
excellent interplay between midfielders Ash Phil and an who combined to create
numerous chances in the 2
nd
half for Don and Mike. Ultimately though Droitwich
just lacked a cutting edge when in the circle and struggled to capitilise on the the
good positions the team found themselves in, letting ourselves down with the final
pass or the shot on goal.
Sutton took advantage of this mid way through the half and scored from another
penalty corner after a clumsy obstruction outside the circle.
After this Droitwich kept the pressure on the Sutton defence who defended well,
under the mounting pressure, seeing the game out to give a score line of 2-0.
This sees the Mens 4s team take another step forward, despite this not being
reflected in the final result.
Droitwich played the ball around well, and varied the type of play, although at
times just needed to move the ball wider and have a little more composure in
front of goal. This comes with experience, and going forward the team has an
excellent defensive foundation who are giving an attacking option going forward,
and midfield and strikers getting in the correct positions.
