Admixtures

This document discusses tests conducted on concrete admixtures. It begins with an introduction that defines admixtures and additives. It then discusses reasons for using admixtures such as increasing workability and modifying concrete properties. The main types of admixtures covered are chemical, mineral, and air-entraining admixtures. The document focuses on types of chemical admixtures according to ASTM standards and defines each type. Test methods and equipment used are also mentioned.

Tests on Concrete Admixtures

Types of Admixtures
Types of Chemical Admixtures

Introduction

Admixtures is defined as
a material other than water, aggregates, hydraulic
cement, and fiber reinforcement used as an
ingredient of concrete or mortar, and added to the
batch immediately before or during its mixing.

Additive is defined as a material that is added at the

cement manufacturing stage

Reasons for using admixtures

Admixtures are used to modify properties of fresh
concrete, mortar, and grout to:
Increase workability without increasing water
content
Retard or accelerate the time of initial setting
Reduce or prevent settlement, or create a slight
expansion
Modify bleeding characteristics
Reduce segregation
Improve pumpability
Reduce the rate of slump loss
Improve finishability.

Reasons for using admixtures

Admixtures are used to modify properties of hardened
concrete, mortar, and grout to:

Reduce the rate of heat evolution during early cement

hydration
Accelerate the rate of strength development at early ages
Increase strength (compressive, tensile, or flexural)
Increase resistance to freezing and thawing
Decrease permeability
Reduce expansion caused by alkali-aggregate reaction
Improve impact resistance and abrasion resistance
Inhibit corrosion of embedded metal
Produce colored concrete or mortar
Reduce drying shrinkage.

Types of Admixtures
Chemical Admixtures: Water soluble compounds added
primarily to control setting and early hardening of fresh
concrete or to reduce the water requirements
Mineral admixtures: Finely divided solids to improve
workability, durability, or provide additional cementing
properties.
Air-entraining admixtures: Added primarily to improve
freeze-thaw durability

Miscellaneous admixtures: Those admixtures that don't fall

under the above categories.

According to ASTM

Type AWater-reducing admixtures

Type BRetarding admixtures

Type DWater-reducing and retarding admixtures
Type EWater-reducing and accelerating admixtures
Type FWater-reducing, high range admixtures
Type GWater-reducing, high range, and retarding

Types of Chemical Admixtures

Definitions:
Accelerating admixturean admixture that accelerates
the setting and early strength development of
concrete.

Retarding admixturean admixture that retards the

setting of concrete.
Water-reducing admixturean admixture that reduces
the quantity of mixing water required to produce
concrete of a given consistency.

Types of Chemical Admixtures

Definitions:
Water-reducing admixture, high rangean admixture
that reduces the quantity of mixing water required to
produce concrete of a given consistency by 12 % or
greater.
Water-reducing and accelerating admixture an
admixture that reduces the quantity of mixing water
required to produce concrete of a given consistency
and accelerates the setting and early strength
development of concrete.

Types of Chemical Admixtures

Definitions:
Water-reducing and retarding admixture an
admixture that reduces the quantity of mixing water
required to produce concrete of a given consistency
and retards the setting of concrete.
Water-reducing, high range, and retarding admixture
an admixture that reduces the quantity of mix in
water required to produce concrete of a given
consistency by 12 % or greater and retards the setting
of concrete.
