Metropolis is a black and white silent film with some subtitles and a theme tune all the way through. Through the ages there has been a lot of the film lost that may never be recovered, however this dues not hinder the brilliance of the this film at all. Peter Bradshaw calls it, One of the biggest, strangest, maddest films in cinema history,(2010). It was the Avatar of its time, it was big, expensive and very successful as Kenneth Turan backs up with his statement, most expensive European film ever made, busting its budget on things like 310 shooting days and a reported 36,000 extras. (2010)
Fig 2. Supporting still. If there was one word that describes this it is BOLD, they did not hold anything back when they made this master peace. Philip French states, I have been entranced by its boldness, imagination and vision and its readiness to combine high intelligence with crow-pleasing melodrama,(2010) and being a film that is going to grudged on the vision in which it gives the viewers, it would get the highest score every time in every era. It is a mild horror/ sci-fi film for todays film lovers but a lot of the horrors, sci-fis fans have a lot to thank Metropolis as it is the inspiration of many todays horrors and sci-fi films and is the granddaddy of them all.
So what made this film so big? The actual setting made it so that all others that had come before seemed tiny and it let lose the question on how far they could take films that would draw in the viewer like never before. For example on the scale it let lose the makings of star wars that was set on a brood space to get the viewers in and worked. But not only was it metropolis big, it was meant to be real and that came off well as the viewer dues get this feeling of being succeed into the film setting and into the characters with each scene.
Kim Newman describes it as, essential viewing for any movie lover, and if any true movie lovers have not seen this they definitely should so they can marvel at what is the godfather of all the sci-fi films since.
