The Selection Process

ELIGIBILITY

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

Candidates who have completed their II PUC / 12th Standard or equivalent in 2010 and those who are expecting to complete it in 2011 are eligible to apply. The candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as main subjects during their PUC / 12th Standard. Candidates who have studied Biology, Statistics, Electronics, Computer Science, etc., should also have taken Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The candidates should have a first class or 60% or an equivalent grade (relaxed to pass class for SC/ST candidates). SELECTION Based on the merit lists of one of the following national examinations: KVPY-SA-2009 (selected as fellows), KVPY-SB (appeared in 2010), KVPY-SX/SB+2 (appeared in 2010), IIT-JEE (appearing in 2011), AIEEE (appearing in 2011), and AIPMT (appearing in 2011). It may be noted that offers would be made ensuring that at least 30 percent of the offers will be based on performance in KVPY examinations (KVPY-SA-2009; KVPY-SB-2010; KVPYSB+2-2010) and at least 30 percent offers will be based on performance in the JEE/AIEEE/AIPMT examinations. Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/Physically-Handicapped (PH) and Kashmiri-Migrant (KM) candidates: As per Government of India regulations. APPLICATION FORMS An application form may be obtained by either of the following two methods. You have to apply either through the off-line mode or the online mode but not both. 1. Off-line application - Send your request for an application form with two address slips, with your mailing address clearly written (preferably stickers), and a Demand Draft for Rs. 600/- for GN/OBC/KM candidates (Rs.300/- for SC/ST/PH categories, along with a copy of an appropriate certificate) to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012. The DD has to be drawn in favour of "The Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore". 2. Online application - Online application may be prepared and submitted by accessing the IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/ug on or after 01.01.2011. The online application fee is Rs. 400/- for GN/OBC/KM candidates and Rs. 200/-for SC/ST/PH categories. After submitting the online application, a printed copy of the filled online application along with a Demand Draft for the required amount must be sent to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012. The DD has to be drawn in favour of "The Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore".

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORMS Online applications must be submitted on or before 25.03.2011. Completed off-line application form and online application form (printed copy) should reach the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, IISc, Bangalore-560012 on or before31.03.2011. Under Special Class Railway Apprentice(SCRA) Graduate

The SCRA scheme was started in 1927 by the British, to select a handful of most intelligent Indians to assist them Railway Operations, after training at their Railway's largest workshop, i.e. Jamalpur Workshop, and for one year Kingdom. The selected candidates were required to appear in the Mechanical Engineering Degree Exmination Engineering Council (London).

Since then, the few admission seats for one of the country's first engineering college have always been hotly c with as many as 1 to 1.5 lakh candidates taking the entrance examination, now conducted by UPSC, for seats.That translates into an astonishing ratio of 1 selection per 10,000 applicants

The scheme has continued to draw the country's best talent after independence and has provided Indian Railway top-ranking officers in all walks. Many of the Institute's alumni have won international accolade for having excellence in their chosen careers, which include inventors, academicians, entrepreneurs, and high-ranking officer nations.

The examination comprises written test in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, General Knowle Psychological Test (Mental Ability). The selected candidates are called for an interview, which is followed by a examination. The standard of syllabus is that of Class XII (CBSE equivalent).

The notice for the SCRA entrance examination, along with form and syllabus, is brought out by the UPSC ar months of June-July. According to the new rules issued by the Ministry of Railways, the exam is now conducted every two years.

The selected candidates undergo a four-year rigorous training programme in Mechanical Engineering, for w Institute has a Memorandum of Understanding with BIT, Mesra, Ranchi. The semester system of BIT, Mesra is with workshop training sessions during the holidays at BIT, Mesra.

The apprentices get a stipend of Rs. 9100 with Dearness Allowance, apart from medical benefits, privelege pa PTOs.

After successful completion of four years of training, the candidates join as Indian Railway Services of Mechanical E (IRSME) Officers in Indian Railways to face a challanging and satisfying career.
