NON-FICTION READING AND WRITING Class Information

Students will study topics in Science, History, Art and Business. Students will master: Note-taking Paraphrasing Summarizing Researching Writing Reporting Forming an opinion Arguing an opinion This class gives students the skills they need for high school and university studies. It is excellent preparation for the TOEFL exam.

STAGE 1
- Note taking - Paraphrasing - Summarizing
1. 2. 3. 4. Students will be given non-fiction articles from textbooks and newspapers Students highlight the main idea and important information Students write the highlighted information in their own words (paraphrases) Students then write a well organized summary

STAGE 2
- Researching - Reporting
1. 2. 3. Students have mastered Stage 1 Students learn how to research information and report the information Students also learn how to properly cite sources

STAGE 3
- Arguing an opinion
1. 2. 3. 4. Students will be comfortable with researching and reporting Students combine the skills they learned in Stage 1 and 2 Students research a topic and form an opinion Students then argue their opinion using their research as support
