Themodelbrewer

The document discusses how modeling is a cognitive tool used to gain perspective on objects that are too big or small to see directly. It provides examples of how physical models are used in teaching CPR and first aid. The document also discusses how modeling allows brewers to experiment with new methods by creating smaller scale models of the brewing process, and how a video called 'The Model Brewer' uses various forms of modeling to depict the brewing process and teaching.

The Model Brewer
The cognitive tool oI Modeling is a skill used to think dimensionally and to gain
perspective by using 2D or 3D representations oI objects. It is a skill that is required when
dealing with anything that is beyond the scope oI a normal 'human eye view oI the world. A
model oI the atom is used to represent that which is too small Ior our eyes to see, and a model oI
the solar system is used to represent that which is too big Ior us to touch. The cognitive tool oI
Modeling is a thinking skill that is used in many diIIerent ways, but quite oIten it relies on actual
physical models oI objects that are either impossible or inconvenient to use in their real world
maniIestations. When teaching CPR and First aid, models oI adult and inIant victims are used to
represent victims who may be in danger oI dying. The skills being practiced upon the models
can be liIe threatening themselves when being perIormed on an inIant, so the models give
students the opportunity to practice in a saIe environment.
Modeling impacts more than the skill oI teaching, however. Modeling impacts the act oI
brewing in ways that give those capable oI using the cognitive tool a way in which to experiment
with new methods, systems, and structures without having to invest the resources required to
perIorm the same action on a large scale. A delicious beer served at Mount Pleasant Brewing
Company Ior a very short amount oI time was called 'Spruce Tip Ale. This was an
experimental brew, oI which only a small amount was made. This can be thought oI as a model
beer, on the scale oI 1:100, whereas only 10 gallons were made, but the normal size oI the brew
is 1000.
In the video 'The Model Brewer, the main character is not only a brewer, but also a
teacher. When considering the topic oI brewing and the ways in which models can be used to
help teach and explain the process, several ideas and concepts arise along the same basic theme.
These are miniaturizations or other 3D or 2D physical or virtual representations oI objects used
in the brewing process, such as the Iermenting tank, the mash tun, or the carbonation system.
These models could be used to give students a hands-on experience with items that may not be
available in the classroom. However, in order to take this modeling process to another level, and
to think diIIerently about the ways in which modeling can be used, a model oI an object used in
the brewing process is not the only model presented. The Brewing Thermometer is an essential
item used in the process, and it is modeled in stop-motion animation, but on another level, the
classroom itselI is modeled, and the teaching process is presented with model students, and a
model teacher. All oI this is presented in a 2D virtual model: an internet video.
