MDMA Powerpoint

A 16-year-old male presents with symptoms including headache, nausea, muscle twitching, confusion, euphoria, flushing, sweating, heart palpitations, dilated pupils, and dry mouth. His diagnosis is serotonin syndrome, likely induced by MDMA (ecstasy). MDMA enhances the release of catecholamines and inhibits their reuptake, increasing neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft and enhancing postsynaptic activation. However, MDMA overdose can cause effects like dizziness, tremor, hypertension, sweating, dilated pupils, arrhythmias, hyperthermia, seizures, coma, and brain hemorrhage.

Physiological Effects of MDMA
How does MDMA work in the body?
 It enhances the release of

catecholamines from presynaptic

terminals and inhibits their neuron
reuptake. Consequently, the
neurotransmitter content in the
synaptic cleft is increased, resulting
in enhanced postsynaptic activation.
Physiological Effects of MDMA

 In overdose, MDMA causes dizziness,

tremor, irritability, hypertension,
diaphoresis, mydriasis, cardiac
arrythmias, hyperpyrexia,
convulsions, coma and cerebral
