White Paper: Push To Talk Technology

October 2003

Introduction
Push-To-Talk (PTT) is a special feature on a mobile phone that combines the functionality of a walkie-talkie or 2-way radio with the normal mobile phone. It provides simple communication to a group of people with just a touch of a button. It is often referred to in Nokia technical documentation as Push to Talk over Cellular (PoC).

How does PTT work?

It is based on half-duplex Voice over IP (VoIP) technology over the 2nd generation GSM/GPRS network. Thanks to the IP technology, the Push to talk service uses cellular access and radio resources more efficiently than circuit-switched cellular services, reserving network resources only for the duration of talk spurts instead of for an entire call session. All you need is a PTT enabled phone. The phone looks like a regular mobile phone, but has an additional built in PTT button. By pressing the PTT button, you can use this phone to speak to a group of people instantly and simultaneously, unlike a normal phone where you can speak to only one person at a time. The person who keeps the PTT button pressed would be able to speak while others can hear him/her. Thereafter the caller releases the PTT button, and whoever else in the group wants to take on the conversation presses the button and gets the floor for all else to listen. PTT groups are possible only when both the caller and the receiver have subscribed to this service. A PTT call will end when the initial caller ends the call. However throughout the call other members of the group can end the call whenever they wish.

Features & Benefits

Instant contact: PTT is very convenient and easy to use. Press the PTT button and instantly connect with co-workers, family and friends without the trouble of dialing and having to wait till the mobile connects you to the called party. Group Talk: You can talk to many people at the same time by making one PTT Group Call. The service is like a conference call where many of your friends can be on the same call at the same time. All individuals who have a PTT handset and subscribe to the PTT service can participate in the group call. You can decide whom to include in a group. PTT basically operates like a walkie-talkie, where only one person can speak at a time, while the other people in the group listens. The person who presses the PTT button first, will be able to speak while the rest can listen to him/her. Cost saver: One-way communication using PTT facility is more cost-effective. You can convey a message to multiple people at the same time, thereby helping you cut down on expenses. The Group Chat facility ensures you not only faster communication among many people, but is also cost efficient. PTT also does away with multiple calling in order to set-up a conference call.

Standardization Status
On September 10, 2003, - Industry leaders Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens mobile announced the completion of a jointly developed Push to talk over Cellular (PoC) specification

based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as defined by 3GPP. The companies have submitted this specification to the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) standards body for review as a baseline to provide an access-independent and globally interoperable standard for PoC. The work is now ongoing and Nokia is actively participating and supporting the process.
