INTRODUCTION We have around one-IiIths oI the world`s people in India. We have been an independent country Ior the last IiIty-Iour years, Iree to choose whatever economic and trade policies we want, Iree to decide how to respond to our economic and social needs. Our country has been an internationally renowned producer oI cotton, silk, pepper, tea and leather Ior centuries and yet today, our share oI the global trade is less than one percent. It is pretty obvious that the world has come a long way Irom the days oI ancient trading caravans travelling a long way to reach India, the land oI Iabulous wealth, and oI traders playing a premium to buy Indian spices and gems. Today, it is the manuIactured product, not the handcraIted one, which commands attention in the global marketplace.
