En Micro P T Formula

This document provides steps to calculate the power and torque required to drive a pump. It gives equations to calculate hydraulic power and drive power in both imperial and metric units. As an example, it calculates the power needed for a pump moving at 4000 rpm providing 4350 PSI is 0.172 HP. It also provides equations and quick calculation formulas to determine theoretical and drive torque required.

How to calculate the power and the drive torque of your pump?

Imperial
1. Determining power
1.1. Hydraulic power
Hydraulic power is obtained from the following equation: 1 hyd HP = GPM PSI --------1714

Metric system
1. Determining power
1.1. Hydraulic power
Hydraulic power is obtained from the following equation: hyd HP = Q P 1.67

1. 2. Drive power
The mechanical power that must be supplied to the pump will always be 15 to 30% (depending on pump type(1)) greater than the hydraulic power of the pump. hyd HP useful HP = ----------------0.7

1. 2. Drive power
The mechanical power that must be supplied to the pump will always be 15 to 30% (depending on pump type(1)) greater than the hydraulic power of the pump. hyd HP useful HP = ----------------0.7

1. 3. Practical example
A PB 33 pump (0.00274cu.in) is driven at 4000rpm and is required to provide maximum output pressure of 4350PSI. What is the power necessary of the motor driving the pump ? 1 hyd HP = GPM PSI --------1714 1 1 hyd HP = ------- 0.00274 4000 4350 -------- 231 1714 hyd HP = 0.120 HP 0.120 useful HP = ------------ 0.172 HP 0.7 (2) from 1450PSI to maximum pump pressure, the required installed power will be virtually proportionnal to P.
(3) from 11603PSI to 6000rpm, the required installed power will be virtually proportional to N.

1. 3. Practical example
A PB 33 pump (45mm3) is driven at 4000rpm and is required to provide maximum output pressure of 300bar. What is the power necessary of the motor driving the pump ? hyd HP = Q P 1.67 hyd HP = ( 45 10 4000 ) 300 1.67 hyd HP = 90W 90 useful HP = ------ 130W 0.7

from 100bar(2) to maximum pump pressure, the required installed power will be virtually proportionnal to P.

from 800

(3) to 6000rpm, the required installed power will be virtually proportional to N.
