Kinematics Review Test

This document contains an answer key for a physics test covering chapters 1 and 2. It provides worked out solutions to 5 problems: 1) Calculating the maximum height reached by a ball thrown upwards. 2) Converting the acceleration of a car from miles per hour to meters per second squared. 3) Calculating the best time for a 100m sprint by analyzing the sprint in two parts: acceleration and constant velocity. 4) Sketching distance-time and velocity-time graphs for free fall. 5) Using kinematic equations to calculate the height of a bridge given information about a ball being thrown down from the bridge.

CHAPTERS 1 & 2 TEST

50 pts

For each problem below, show ALL your work , and make sure your final answers are clearly indicated, with proper units and significant figures. Assume no air resistance. Good Luck! (All problems are worth 10pts each.) 1. A ball thrown upwards takes 3.20 s to reach its maximum height. What is that height, measured from the point of release?

2. If there are 5280 feet in a mile and 3.28 feet in a meter, express in standard metric units the acceleration of a car that goes from zero to 60.0 mi/h in 10.0 s.

3. Find the best time for a sprinter in the 100 meter dash event of a track meet if she can begin at rest and accelerate at 2.50 m/s2 up to a top speed of 8.00 m/s.

4. a. Sketch a distance-time graph for a body which falls freely from rest without air resistance. b. Sketch a velocity-time graph for a body which falls freely from rest without air resistance.

5. A ball is thrown downwards at 10.0 m/s from a bridge, and it travels the last 15.0 m of its fall in 0.40 s. How high is the bridge? (It is more than 15 meters.)

1)

CHAPTER 1 & 2 TEST A SOLUTIONS Known: vf = 0 a = -9.80 m/s t = 3.20 s Step 1: find vi use vf = vi + at 0 = vi + (-9.80)(3.20) vi = 31.36 m/s Step 2: find x use x = vit + at2 x = (31.36 m/s)(3.20 s) + (-9.80)(3.20)2 = 50.2 m

2)

60 mi/h x (5280 ft/mi) x (1m / 3.28 ft) x (1h / 3600 s) = 26.83 m/s a = (vf vi) / t = (26.83 m/s 0) / 10.0 s = 2.68 m/s2

3)

There are two parts to the runners motion. One part is her accelerating up to top speed. The second part is her cruising at top speed. Part 1: Known: vi = 0 Find time, using Find x, using vf = 8.00 m/s a = 2.50 m/s2 vf = vi + at 8.00 = 0 + 2.50 (t) t = 3.20 s x = vit + at2 x = 0 + (2.50)(3.20)2 = 12.8 m

Part 2: Since she runs 12.8 m during part 1, she must run the final 87.2 m during part 2. Known: x = 87.2 vi = 8.00 m/s a=0 Find time, using x = vit + at2 87.2 = (8.00)(t) + 0 t = 10.9 s Total time = time from part 1 + time from part 2 = 3.20 s + 10.9 s = 14.1 s

4)a.

b.

5) Lets call point A the point of release, and point B is the top of the last 15 m and C is the ground. Lets also define the downward direction as positive. Lets look at the motion from B to C first: Known: x = +15.0 m a = +9.80 m/s2 t=0.40 s Find vi, using x = vit + at2 15.0 = vi (0.4) + (9.80)(0.40)2 vi = 35.54 m/s

This is the velocity at point B

Now lets look at the motion from A to B Known: vi = 10.0 m/s vf = 35.54 m/s a = 9.80 m/s2 vf2 = vi2 + 2a x x = 59.3 m The distance from A-B is 59.3 m. The distance from B-C is 15.0m. Therefore the total distance from A-C is 74.3m Find x, using
