DOWNWARD COMMUNICATION

Definition
Without communication there can be no organization, for there is no possibility then of the group, influencing the behavior of the individual.

Type of communication

Formal comm.

Informal comm.

Upward comm.

Lateral comm.

Downward comm.

Downward communication.
Downward communication flows down from top to bottom of the organizational hierarchy and carrier message from higher authority to lower and down bellow.

Objective of downward comm.

To give direction about what to do and how to do; To explain organizational policies, programmes and procedure; To know how effectively a person is performing his job; To motivate employee to improve there performance and To educate subordinates for performing a particular job.

Medias of downward comm.


The downward communication can be oral or written. The oral communication is mostly through informal channel where as written communication takes the form of official memos, bulletin boards, meeting, circular, etc.

Benefits of downward comm.


It helps to explain the subordinates the organizational plan, policies, programmes and procedure; It helps to convey to the subordinates the expectation of

management from them;

It act as means to control the activities of subordinates with active feedback and It provides motivation to the workers to excel their performance.
