Section 1 Chinas Land and Economy


Chinas yellow river constantly floods. To control floods they built certain dam type structures called dikes. They are high banks of soil. A danger in china is the common earthquakes, china lies along cracks in the earth called faults. After the 1949 china became a communist country. Where government has strong control over all the economy and society. Later, leaders have changed and let a free enterprise system come in, but with communism still allowed. This means people can chose what job they want and where to start a business Soon they learnt to develop in business and asked other countries to invest in to Chinese developing. Invest means to put money into. The economic growth has made china afford consumer goods. They are good quality products such as televisions, cars, and motorcycles. China now stands by the one country two systems pledge where china promises western capitalism next to communism.

Section 2 Chinas People and Culture


Chinas past consist of a large number of dynasties. A dynasty is a long line of rulers from a single family. Countries have protest against the Chinese governments harsh treatment on people saying the have no respect for human rights, rights like freedom and speech. Since china took over the once Buddhist kingdom Tibet the leader, Dalai Lama was forced to exile. Exile means to be unable to stay in a place because of political reasons. Many Chinese paintings include poems written in calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing. Even though modern buildings are there, pagodas still exist. They are many-storied Buddhist temples.

Section 3 Chinas Neighbors


Taiwan is very prosperous because of the high tech industries, producing computers and electronics. Mongolia is a country the size of Alaska, it has a lot of mountains and hills, other parts are covered by steppes, dry treeless plains. The Mongolians used to be and are nomads, people that move from place to place with herds of animals. In the 1200s the Mongols ruled under one leader, Genghis Khan into conquest. They built an empire over time. An empire is a collection of different territories under one ruler. Mongol nomads live in a semi sphere animal structures called yurts, they are made of animal skins and can be easily packed and moved from place to place
