Leon Battista Alberti was an Italian Renaissance polymath born in Genoa, Italy in 1404. He was self-taught and contributed greatly to art, architecture, and cryptography through his many written works on these subjects and original designs for buildings. His greatest work is considered to be the Roman aqueduct Aqua Vergine, which combined both function and beauty.
