GLOSSARY

Metacognition.- Knowledge about our own thinking procces. Ex. Planning tasks, strategies in order to study. Planning.- to work out in advance how something is to be done or organized. Involves deciding how much time to give to a task, which strategies to use, how to start, and so on. Ex. A task list; a notebook with a register of how to manage time. Monitoring.- to check something at regular intervals in order to find out how it is progressing or developing. Is the awareness of how Im doing? Ex. Write checkmarks on each completed task (on the task list mentioned above) Evaluating.- to consider or examine something in order to judge its value, quality, importance, extent, or condition. Involves making judgments about the processes and outcomes of thinking and learning and acting on those judgments. Learning tactics.- Specific techniques for learning. Ex. Using mnemonics or outlining a passage. Concept map.- A drawing that charts the relationships among ideas. Ex

READS.- A five step reading strategy: Review headings; Examine boldface words; Ask, what do I expect to learn?; Do it Read; Summarize in your own words. Cmaps.- Tools for concept mapping developed by the institute for Human and Machine Cognition that are connected to many knowledge mapas and other resources on the internet. CAPS.- A strategy that can be used in reading literature: Characters, Aim of story, Problem, Solution. KWL.- A strategy to guide reading and inquirey: Before What do I already know? What do I want to know? After What have I learned?
