Comp Ex 4

This document provides instructions for three Excel exercises to model inventory management problems. The first asks students to build a spreadsheet for a two-retailer system to calculate total costs for given base stock levels. The second is to use this to find optimal levels with given parameters. The third extends to a five-retailer system with a cross-dock facility, allowing users to input parameters and find optimal base stock and allocation levels through functions like Goal Seek and matrices.

IE464 Computer Exercise 4 Fall 2011 Due Date: 11:55 pm on January 9, 2012 Q1.

. Develop a spread sheet that can be used to implement the Metric approach for a distribution system with one warehouse and two non-identical retailers. The demand rate at the retailers are 3 and 5, respectively. The replenishment lead time for the retailers and the warehouse (L0, L1, and L2) are all two time units. All other relevant problem parameters should be entered by the user. Develop a spread sheet that evaluates the total expected relevant costs of this system per unit time for given values of S0, S1, and S2. Q2. By using the spreadsheet you developed in Q1, find the optimal S0, S1, and S2 values when h0 = 0.5, h1 = h2 = 1, and b1 = b2 {2, 10, 50}. Tabulate your results on a separate sheet. Q3. Consider a distribution system with a cross-dock facility and five retailers. Develop a spreadsheet that can be used to find the optimal echelon base stock level and the optimal allocation quantities to each retailer. All relevant problem parameters should be entered by the user. In order to find the optimal echelon base stock level, the user should use the Goal Seek function of Excel. For optimal allocation quantities, the user should enter the current inventory positions of the retailers and the total allocation quantity. When finding the optimal allocation quantities, you may need to use the matrix operations in Excel. In a separate document, prepare a short manual for the user explaining which steps s/he should follow in order to find the requested measures. Note: For both of the questions, highlight input cells by Yellow and output cells by Blue.
