How to revise for the CXC Chemistry exam
Step 1 Syllabus and past exam papers
Ensure that you have a copy of the current syllabus as well as past exam papers. Look at the syllabus while you study and also work through the past exam papers. This will ensure that you cover all areas of the syllabus effectively while studying. You can get the syllabus and past exam papers from your local examination office, or at your school.
Step 2 Revise
Start revising early! Dont wait until just before the exam to start studying. Draw up a revision plan that covers all aspects of the syllabus a few weeks before the exam. Make sure that you allow yourself enough time to study each section well. Follow your revision plan so that you do not need to learn too much just before the exam. The revision process should be active. You should write down definitions, equations and key points from your textbook or from memory. You can then use your shortened notes to help you study. Pretend that you are writing an actual exam and work through the past exam papers. Once you have finished, refer to your notes and textbook to make sure your answers are correct. Avoid studying late (or all night!) before the exams, or else you will be tired when writing the exam. Do, however, get up early enough so that you can get to the examination room on time and have enough time to settle down.
Step 3 Read the questions carefully
Make sure that you understand each question and what is expected of you. Then answer the question as directly as possible. This may sound obvious, but many students lose marks by not reading carefully enough. For example, if you are asked to name a substance, and you give the formula as an answer, you will not earn any points. Also avoid writing too much. Dont write everything you know about a topic if that is not what you were asked to do. Give only the information asked for. The examiner will only award you marks if you answer what has been asked for. All the best for the upcoming exams!
