Qualities of a supervisor

Leadership is difficult to define accurately, the qualities cannot be learnt yet they are easily recognisable. Good leaders set high standards of performance for themselves and keep to them and they expect similar performances from others. They mix easily and give care and understanding to their staff which in turn will inspire loyalty and high productivity. Intelligence - Supervisors do not have to be above average intelligence, in reality they need shrewdness, good judgement and plenty of common sense. They should also be quick-witted, able to distinguish between major and minor problems and deal with them efficiently. Being able to understand written and verbal instructions and pass information on to subordinates in a clear and concise manner is essential. Skills and knowledge - there are two main areas of skill and knowledge:- Technical, a good knowledge of every operation or process under their control and an ability to demonstrate and train others in whatever tasks are needed. Character - Nobody will possess all the qualities of character to make an ideal supervisor, but some of these are essential e.g. honesty and trustworthiness, with a strict sense of fairness and justice. A stable personality and an even temper along with an open and positive approach would be ideal if dealing with problems and grievances. In brief a good supervisor should possess a combination of these qualities, different combinations of qualities will suit different work situations.
