Lesson Plan in Science and Health IV

The lesson plan describes the phases of the moon. It has the objectives of describing how the moon appears to change shapes from night to night, observing these apparent changes, and using a model of the Earth, moon, and sun to show how their relative positions cause the moon's phases. The lesson introduces the concepts of the moon's revolution around Earth causing its phases, and defines the phases as new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter. It includes procedures for reviewing lunar movements, discussing what causes the moon's light and phases through a model, and having students differentiate waxing and waning and apply their understanding.

Lesson Plan in Science and Health IV PHASES OF THE MOON I.

Objectives: Describe how the moon changes from night to night; Observe the apparent changes that occur in the shape of the moon; Show how the relative position of an observer on Earth, on the moon, and the sun that cause the apparent changes in the shape of the moon using a model;

II. Subject Matter: Topic: Phases of the Moon References: Science and Health in Todays Environment TX. pp.394-397 Science Real- Life TX. pp.300-305 Materials: Model of Earth, moon and sun Picture/ illustration about the phases of the moon Masking tape, visual aid Concepts: 1. The phase of the moon are the apparent changes in its shape brought about by its revolution around Earth. 2. The phase of the moon are the new moon, the first quarter, full moon, and the last quarter. Process Involved: Observing, comparing, describing III. Procedure: A. Review: Movements of Earth B. Motivation: Ask the following questions: 1. What do you notice about the moons shape from night to night?

2. Does the moon really change in shape? C. Presentation of the lesson 1. Present the model and the illustration of the phases of the moon.

2. Discussion Where does the moon gets its light? Discuss how the moon moves. Discuss the phases of the moon. Discuss what waxing and waning mean.

D. Generalization: What are the phases of the moon? Differentiate waxing from waning. How long does it take the moon to go through all of its phases?

E. Application: Does the phases of the moon affect the environment? Why?

IV. Evaluation: Directions: Write on each line the phase of the moon wherein each statement holds true. _____________1. The moon is in between the Sun and the Earth. _____________2. Earth is in between the moon and the sun. _____________3. The thin, silver side of the moon is seen from Earth after the new moon phase. _____________4. Half of the lighted side of the moon is seen from Earth before the full moon phase. _____________5. Half of the lighted side of the moon is seen from Earth after the full moon phase.

V. Assignment:

Draw the phase of the moon.
