Math. 118 B-Ucsb Winter Quarter 2012

Math. 118 B- UCSB is a second quarter course covering metric spaces, sequences and series of functions, and multivariate differential calculus during Winter Quarter 2012. The instructor is Mihai Putinar and the teaching assistant is Charles Martin. Class time will focus on building theoretical foundations through complete proofs, while discussion sections and assignments will take a more problem-solving approach. There will be a midterm on February 9 during class and a final exam on March 22 from 8-11 am. Grades will be based on the final exam (60%), midterm (30%), and homework (10%).

This second quarter of Advanced Calculus and Elementary Real Analysis will cover the following subjects: metric spaces, sequences and series of functions and multivariate differential calculus. Emphasis will be given in class to build a solid theoretical construct, based on complete proofs of the main results; the discussion section will be oriented towards a dynamical approach to solving relevant problems, while the exams and the homework will also touch basic techniques of mathematical exposition. Midterm on Thursday, February 9, during class hours. Final Exam on Thursday, March 22, 8-11 am. The final grade will be computed as follows: Final Exam 60%, Midterm 30%, Homework 10%.
