Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is commonly used for infections of the ears, throat, lungs, skin, and urinary tract. Contraindications include a history of allergy to penicillin. Common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and oral or vaginal yeast infections with prolonged use. Nurses should monitor for signs of allergic reaction like rash or difficulty breathing and watch for diarrhea which could indicate pseudomembranous colitis.

amoxicillin Amoxil

Amoxicillin inhibits Therapeutic: Margeline bacterial Anti-bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the Ocampo penicillin binding proteins (PBPs); which in turn inhibits the final Adalla transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, thus inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis. Bacteria eventually lyse due to ongoing activity of cell wall autolytic enzymes (autolysins and murein hydrolases) while cell wall assembly is arrested.

Amoxicillin is used to treat infections due to organisms that are susceptible to the effects of amoxicillin. Common infections that amoxicillin is used for include infections of the middle ear, tonsils, throat, larynx (laryngitis), bronchi (bronchitis), lungs (pneumonia), urinary tract, and skin. It also is used to treat gonorrhea.

A history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins is a contraindication.

Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection).

Monitor for S&S of an urticarial rash (usually occurring within a few days after start of drug) suggestive of a hypersensitivity reaction. If it occurs, look for other signs of hypersensitivity (fever, wheezing, generalized itching, dyspnea), and report to physician immediately. Report onset of generalized, erythematous, maculopapular rash (ampicillin rash) to physician. Ampicillin rash is not due to hypersensitivity; however, hypersensitivity should be ruled out. Closely monitor diarrhea to rule out pseudomembranous colitis.
