WHAT: The BRIGANCE Screen II is an easy-to-administer standardized tool that assists teachers by accurately assessing key developmental and early academic skills. Children in Chesterfield County are screened before entering kindergarten. Results help teachers plan appropriate instruction for students. WHY: The primary purpose of the BRIGANCE Screen II is to obtain a broad sampling of
a childs skills and behaviors for one or more of the following reasons: To help determine the most appropriate placement for each child To assist the teacher in planning the most appropriate instruction for each child To provide information to parents on skill areas needing reinforcement before school begins

Kindergarten Registration

WHO WILL BE SCREENED: Students entering kindergarten will be screened


using the BRIGANCE K and 1 Screen II.

WHERE AND WHEN: Each student entering kindergarten will be screened on


kindergarten registration day at his or her elementary school. The basic screening of most children can be completed in 15 minutes.

WHO WILL CONDUCT THE SCREENING: Trained professionals will


conduct the screening.

FEATURES OF THE SCREENING:


The assessment provides a sampling of a childs learning, development and skills in a broad range of areas, such as fine-motor skills, body awareness, general knowledge, language development and gross-motor skills. The screening assessment is presented in a format that will allow a high degree of success. The BRIGANCE Screen II is standardized and validated through extensive research.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE OF THE DATA: BRIGANCE Screen II


data will be used to help kindergarten teachers identify each students potential areas of strength and need. The data will not be used to exclude students from the kindergarten program of Chesterfield County Public Schools or to place students in a special program.
