Pulse Width Modulation

Pulse width modulation is a process that modifies the width of pulses in proportion to a control signal. There are different types including sinusoidal PWM and space vector PWM. Sinusoidal PWM compares a triangular carrier wave to a sine wave to determine switching points for power devices in an inverter, but it does not fully utilize supply voltage and produces high harmonic distortion. The inverter output voltage is determined by comparing a control signal to a triangular wave, with the output equal to half the DC supply voltage when the control is greater than the triangle and negative half the supply when the control is less.

Pulse width modulation

Pulse width modulation is the process of modifying the width of the pulses in a pulse train in direct proportion to a small control signal. There are different types of pulse width modulations. Among them, the well known are Sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). Sinusoidal PWM has been very popular technique used in AC motor control. This relatively unsophisticated method employs a triangular carrier wave compared with a sine wave and the points of intersection determine the switching points of the power devices in the inverter. However, this method is unable to make full use of the inverters supply voltage and the asymmetrical nature of the PWM switching characteristics produces relatively high harmonic distortion in the supply.

Figure As depicted in figure above, the inverter output voltage is determined in the following: When Vcontrol > Vtri, VA0 = Vdc/2 When Vcontrol < Vtri, VA0 = Vdc/2
