I. Objectives: Within the period, the second year students with 80% accuracy are expected to: A. define compound- complex sentence; B. identify the dependent and independent clauses in given compound- complex sentences; and C. construct compound- complex sentences by combining given dependent and independent clauses. II. Subject Matter: A. Topic: Compound- Complex Sentence B. Skill Focus: writing, reasoning III. Instructional Materials: References: Exploring Life through Afro- Asian Literature by Josephine Romero and Alon de los Reyes Materials: Cartolina for visual aids Pictures for stimulating activity IV. Procedure: A. Stimulating Activity The teacher will present to the students a facebook page. In it will be statuses and shoutouts by random famous people. These statuses and shoutouts will exemplify the types of sentences discussed the previous day: (review) Example: I love to go to the beach and spend time sunbathing. SIMPLE Although I like to go shopping, I havent found a shopping buddy. COMPLEX When she changes her mind, this is the first place she would go. COMPLEX Khloe and I danced and we giggled all night. COMPOUND Your voice was the soundtrack of my summer. SIMPLE
Then, the teacher will ask the students to identify what type of sentence each of the sentences are. Example: The first sentence is a simple sentence. It has one subject and has a compound predicate. It expresses one thought. It is composed of only one independent clause. B. Actual Activity The teacher will present three sentences to the students. Blair prefers watching romantic films. She rented the latest horror-thriller. She enjoyed it very well.
The teacher will let the students to combine the three sentences and make one complete thought from it. The sentence will be: Though Blair prefers watching romantic films, she rented the latest horror-thriller and she enjoyed it very much. Then, the teacher will ask the students: What kind of sentence is this? What is a compound-complex sentence? How were the three sentences turned into one compound-complex sentence? Now, the teacher will give sample sentences to the students. Isabel began painting only two years ago, but she has already been asked to hang one of her paintings at the art exhibit that is scheduled for next month. When we returned from camp, we were very tired, but we had many pleasant experiences to remember long afterward. The students will be asked to underline the independent clauses and encircle the dependent clause. Then, the teacher will give more sample sentences. On our way up to the camp, which is built around a lake in the mountains, we sang songs, and some of the counselors entertained us with stories about past summers at the camp.
The minute that the bus stopped at the campsite, we all went hurriedly out, for we were anxious to see our cabins. Some cabins were in the woods, and because they were shaded by many trees, they were cool. We were all pleased with our accommodations, and we set to work immediately to find names for our cabins so that would really feel at home. Since we had only gone a mile from camp, we decided to return before dark for we still prepared for our dinner. C. Follow-Up Activity The teacher will divide the class into four. The teacher will give the students sentences for them to combine and form a compound-complex sentence which they will share to the class. The soup was too hot. I let it cool for awhile. I ate it with my sister. Harry Potter forgot Rons birthday. He finally remembered. He bought him a wand. He is disappointed. Hes wanting to be in Gryffindor. He got in Slytherin. Finn jumped for joy. The glee club cheered. They won the state championship. Serena is a socialite. People expect her to look perfect. Other people expect her to be humiliated. All the other Cullens went to school today. Edward remained at home. Edward is avoiding Bella. Jack Sparrow lost his treasure map. He remembered where the treasure is. He found the buried treasure. They eloped without their families blessings.

Underline the two independent clauses twice and underline the dependent clause once. 1. The woman entered the movie theater excitedly but she left soon because the theater was overflowing with people. 2. Although Mrs. Gozhum is a professional nurse in India, she still finds English is a difficult language and she cannot speak it well. 3. The stray dogs were scratching the door as if they were scared so we let them in. 4. The rain fell heavily on the roof, yet Mother and Father were not awakened until the floodwater was knee-high. 5. The news program gave the old man some fear or it made him excited to hear about his country which is holding an election.

VI. Assignment: Below are independent clauses. Provide a dependent and an independent clause to make a compound-complex sentence. 1. It was raining hard. 2. He fell off of the roof. 3. We decided that the movie was too violent. 4. We should hurry up and leave. 5. The students failed the test.
