Phase Test 2

The document provides information about a steam power plant operating on a Rankine cycle with reheat. It details that high pressure steam is generated at 35 bar and 400°C, expanded through a high pressure turbine, reheated to 400°C, and then expanded through a low pressure turbine down to 0.1 bar. The net work output of the cycle is 20MW. Candidates are asked to (1) calculate the mass flowrate of high pressure steam, (2) calculate the cycle efficiency, and (3) compare the cycle efficiency to a Carnot cycle operating between the same temperature limits and comment on why the Carnot efficiency is higher.

NO ADDITIONAL MATERIAL MAY BE TAKEN INTO THE EXAMINATION ROOM

Steam Tables are provided.

A steam power plant, operating following a Rankine cycle with reheat, raises High Pressure (HP) steam at 35 bar and 400oC in the boiler. The HP steam is fed to an extraction HP turbine. The steam leaves the HP turbine at 8 bar, before being reheated to 400oC. The reheated stream is then fed to a Low Pressure (LP) turbine where it expands to 0.1 bar. The required net work (taking into account the work from the pump) from the cycle is 20MW.

The condensate is a saturated liquid at 0.1 bar. The feed pump can be assumed isentropic. Both turbines have an isentropic efficiency of 85%. All pressures are given in bar absolute.

1. Calculate the mass flowrate of HP steam raised in the boiler [10 Marks] 2. Calculate the efficiency of the cycle. [5 Marks] 3. Compare the efficiency of this cycle to that of a Carnot cycle operating between the HP steam temperature and the condenser temperature. Comment on why the Carnot cycle efficiency is higher [5 Marks]

Your answer must include a copy of the cycle flowsheet appropriately labelled.
