1.1 Characteristics of A Function-Notes

The document discusses characteristics of functions including: 1) A function is a special type of relation where each input is mapped to exactly one output. Not all relations are functions. 2) The domain of a function is the set of all possible inputs, while the range is the set of all possible outputs. 3) The vertical line test can be used to determine if a relation is a function - if a vertical line ever passes through more than one point, it is not a function.

Characteristics of a Function

Relation vs. Function Relation: any kind of associations between two variables (x and y). Relations can be listed explicitly or written as an equation implicitly. E.g.

Function: a special relation in which every x value can only generates one y value. Not all relations are functions. Ex1. Which of the following relations is a function? Relation A Number of Days in Month, x Minimum Daily Temperature (C), y 0 0 2 2 2 -2 4 -4 4 4

Relation B Number of Days in Month, x Minimum Daily Temperature (C), y 0 0 2 2 4 4 6 6 7 7

Domain and Range Domain: Range: Domain and Range can be written in set notation. Write the domain and range for Ex1.

Ex2. For the following relations, state the domain and range. Explain whether they are functions or not: Set P = {(1, 4), (2, 4), (3, 3), (4, 2)} Set Q = {(1, 5), (1, 4), (2, 3), (3, 2)}

Vertical Line Test Vertical Line Test is another way to determine whether a relation is a function. The relation is not a function if at least one vertical line drawn through the graph of the relation passes through two or more points. Ex3. State the domain and range of the following relations. Use vertical line test to determine whether they are functions or not:
