Biometrics refers to the automatic identification of individuals based on physiological or behavioral characteristics. There are two categories of biometrics: physical (such as fingerprints, facial recognition, hand geometry, iris scans, retina scans, and DNA scans) and behavioral (such as voice recognition and signature recognition). Biometrics are used for verification (is this who they claim to be?) and identification (who is this person?) purposes. Common biometric technologies include fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, iris recognition, and voice recognition. Fingerprint recognition analyzes distinctive fingerprint features while facial recognition extracts features from a captured facial image to compare templates. Iris recognition generates an iris code for comparison against databases. Biometrics provide highly accurate and secure identification alternatives to passwords

WHAT IS BIOMETRICS

BIO- physical or behavioral METRICS- to measure characteristics

Biometrics refers to automatic identification of a person based on his or her physiological or behavioral characteristics. Pattern recognition system.

2 CATEGORIES
1)physical:
*fingerprint recognition *facial recognition *hand geometry *iris scan *retina scan *DNA scan 2)behavioral: *voice recognition *signature recognition

WHY BIOMETRICS ?

PINs and passwords may be forgotten. Passwords , passports , licenses may be forged ,stolen or lost. Highly accurate and secure.

USES OF BIOMETRICS

Simple:

Verification - Is this who he claims to be? Identification who is this?

Advanced:

Detecting multiple identities. Electronic banking.

GENERAL WORKING

FINGERPRINT RECOGNITION

Oldest form of Biometrics Highly Reliable Uses distinctive features of fingers

FINGERPRINTS
Finger-scan

biometrics is based on the distinctive characteristics of the human fingerprint A fingerprint image is read from a capture device Features are extracted from the image A template is created for comparison.

FACE RECOGNITION
1)Capture image 2)Find face in image 3)Extract features 4)Compare templates 5)Declare matches.

BASIS OF FACIAL SCAN

Facial scan: Uses off-the-shelf camera to measure the following facial features:

Distance between the eyes.

Distance between the eyes and nose ridge.

Angle of a cheek. Slope of the nose.

FACIAL SCAN

IRIS RECOGNITION
Database of millions of records Iris code generated is compared Searching algorithm based on Properties of Iris Order of a few seconds.

IRIS SYSTEM
Uniform distribution

Stored templates

Pre processing
Iris scan image capture

Reject Featureextraction Identification Verification Accept Iris code comparison

Iris localization

VOICE SCAN
Measures the sound waves of human speech. It uses vocal characteristics to identify the individuals. Voice print is compared to a previous one.

SIGNATURE SCAN

Signature scan: Measures speed, pressure, stroke order an image of signature.

CONCLUSION
Possibly in the near future, you will no have to Remember PINs and passwords and keys in your bags and pockets due to facility of biometrics.
