To start burning . Temperature above self ignition. It provides energy by electric spark. Spark intensity should be high. Spark intensity if weak ignition will not be initiated.
ELECTRIC SPARK
Spark of 0.5 milliseconds is needed. High voltage of 10000 V. 4-stroke engine: every 2 revolution 2-stroke engine: every revolution Ex- 6 cylinder 4-stroke engine(5000 rpm) No. of sparks = 6*5000/2 =15000
REQUIREMENTS
Electrical supply. Sufficient current. Sufficient Duration. Distributing device. Light and Compact. Easy to maintain. Battery voltage 6 to 12 volts.

IGNITION CIRCUIT
WORKING
When primary circuit is closed by contact breaker , current begins to flow through primary coil and magnetize the core . The emf is induced in secondary . This emf is proportional to magnetic flux .But , the emf produced in secondary is not sufficient to produce the spark.

CONTINUED
When primary circuit is opened by contact breaker magnetic field collapses Condenser connected in primary circuit helps to collapse the field rapidly by absorbing part energy of magnetic field which is thrown back into the primary winding and produces a very high voltage in secondary and produces spark.
BATTERY
Used for starting and vehicle lighting. Lead acid batteries are commonly used. Consists of positive and negative plates immersed in dil. sulphuric acid. Electrolyte 1.2 to 1.28 SG ,25% acid. Switch is used to avoid overcharging and discharging.
Ignition Coil
Primary Windings are made up of several hundred turns of heavy wire wrapped around or near the secondary windings.
Secondary Windings consist of several thousand turns of very fine wire, located inside or near the secondary windings.
Distributor
Actuates the on/off cycle of current flow through the ignition coil primary windings.

CAPACITOR
Works as a electrical capacitor. Two plates and in between air. If a material is used in between it should be thin. But, should withstand electrostatic stresses.
ADVANTAGES
Better spark at low speed. Low initial cost. Reliable. Less maintenance.
