HW01 Solution

This document contains 5 questions related to density and specific gravity calculations: 1. It asks to calculate the density of a drilling mud that is 60% water and 40% barite, giving a density of 1450 kg/m3. 2. It explains that specific gravities are most often referred to the density of water at 4°C because water has its highest density at that temperature. 3. It calculates that the total proven oil reserves of the US are equivalent to 1.106 cubic miles. 4. It states that the density of iron in SI units is 7870 kg/m3. 5. It asks the reader to calculate their own volume and density by approximating

HW01

1. Calculate the density of drilling mud that is 60 wt. % water, 40 wt. % BaSO 4 (barite).
Use SGbarite = 4.49.

ρwater=1000 kg/m3
ρbarite=4.49 x 1000 (kg/m3)=4490 kg/m3

100
  1450
60 40 kg/m3 =90.6 lbm/ft3

1000 4490

2. Why are specific gravities most often referred to the density of water at 4oC instead of
0oC?

Because (at atmospheric pressure) the density of water is the largest at 4 oC.

3. The total proven oil reserves of the U.S. are roughly 29 x 109 bbl. How many cubic
miles is this?

29 x 109 bbl (5.615 ft3/bbl) (mile/5279.86 ft)3=1.106 mile3

4. What is the density of iron in strict SI units?

ρiron=7870 kg/m3

5. Using the America Engineering System of units, use your

 mass,
 height,
 average radius of your horizontal cross section
Approximating your body as a cylinder, calculate your volume.
Then calculate your density from the above obtained variables.
Now compare the obtained density to any other information you might have (e.g. is it
easy to swim?)

The density is very close to water density, so it seems reasonable to swim easily.
SI American
Mass 90 kg 198.4 lb
Height 1.92 m 6.299 ft
Radius 0.12 m 0.394 ft
3 3
Volume 0.0869 m 3.067 ft
3 3
Density 1036.2 kg/m 64.69 lbm/ft
