Area & Volume

This document provides formulas for calculating the areas and volumes of various 2D and 3D shapes. It lists formulas for rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, circles, spheres, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and frustums (truncated cones or pyramids) and their surfaces areas and volumes. The formulas include using measurements like length, width, height, radius, diameter, and averages of bases to calculate areas and volumes.

2D Shapes: Area Formulas

Rectangle or Cube Area = Length x Width A=LxW

3D Shapes: Area and Volume Formulas

Rectangular or Cube Prism Surface Area = 2Lw + 2Lh + 2wh Volume = Length x Width x height V=LxWxh

Parallelogram Area = base x height A=bxh Triangle Area = 1/2 of base x height A = 1/2 b x h or A = b x h 2

Parallelogram shaped Prism (called a parallelepided) Surface Area = as per Rectangular Prism Volume = as per Rectangular Prism Triangular Prism Surface Area = 2b + Ph (b is the area of the base; P is the perimeter of the base) Volume = base x height x Length 2 V = b x h x L or V = bhL 2

2D Shapes: Area Formulas

Trapezoid Area = height x average of bases A = h x base 1 + base 2 2

3D Shapes: Area and Volume Formulas

Trapezoid Prism V = height of trapezoid x average length of bases x length of prism V = h x (base 1 + base 2) x L 2

Circle The distance around the circle is a circumference. C = d = Pi = 3.14; The distance across is the diameter (d). The radius (r) is the distance from the center to a point on the circle. Area = Pi x radius squared A = r2 or A = .785d2

Spheres Surface Area = Pi x diameter squared Surface Area = d2 Volume = 4/3 x Pi x radius cubed V = 4/3 r3 V = 4/3 r3

Cylinder Surface Area = (2 radius x height) + (2 x radius squared) Surface Area = 2rh + 2r2 Lateral Area = 2 radius x height AL = 2rh or AL = dh Volume = r2 x height V = r2 h or V = .785d2 x h

Cones Surface Area = Pi x radius squared + Pi x radius x Slant height of the cone Surface Area = r2 + rS Lateral Area = x radius x Slant height AL = rS Volume = 1/3 x Pi x radius squared x height V = 1/3 r2h Pyramid Surface Area: Area of base plus the sum of the areas of all of the triangular faces. V = 1/3 Area of base x height V = 1/3 Ah where A is the area of the base Frustum If you know the original height, use: Volume = (1/3 x Ah1) - (1/3 x Ah2) where A is the area of the bases V = (1/3 x L1 x W1 x h1) - (1/3 x L2 x W2 x h2) If you dont know the original height, use:

For circular cone frustums use: where is 3.14 and R1, R2 are the radii of the two bases.
