This document contains instructions for a sessional test in analog and digital communication for an engineering college course. It includes 4 questions: [1] What is delta modulation and how can its limitations be minimized using adaptive delta modulation?, [2] Calculate appropriate values for sampling rate, quantization level, and number of bits per sample for PCM voice transmission over a 36 kbps binary channel, [3] Compare ASK, FSK and BPSK modulation schemes and derive the probability of error equation for BPSK, [4] Calculate the probability of error for a coherent BFSK system given transmission parameters.

Attempt all questions. Q1: What is delta modulation? Explain with the help of suitable block diagram and waveform. What is the limitation of delta modulation? How can these limitations be minimized using adaptive delta modulation? [8] Q2: A binary channel bit rate 36000 bits per sec is available for PCM voice transmission. Find appropriate value of sampling rate, quantization level and number of binary bits per sample. Assuming maximum frequency 3.2 kHz. [6] Q3: a) Compare ASK, BFSK and BPSK on following points1) Equation of transmitted signal. 2) Probability of error

[4] bit

1 Eb b) Show that probability of error Pe for BPSK is given by .erfc . Where Eb is 2 energy and /2 is power spectral density of white noise. [6]

Q4: For an BFSK system the following data are observed. Transmitted binary data rate is 2.5 x 106 bits/ sec, power spectral density (PSD) of noise is 10-20 watts/Hz, and amplitude of received signal is 1 volt. Determine probability of error assuming coherent detection. [The value of erfc (2.23) = 1.84 x 10-3 ]. [6]
