What Animals Eat

Animals need food for energy and growth. Herbivores, or plant-eaters, like cows and giraffes eat plants. Carnivores, or meat-eaters, like lions and eagles eat other animals. Omnivores like mice and humans eat both plants and animals. The shape of an animal's teeth depends on what type of foods it eats. Herbivores eat almost all day to get the same amount of energy from plants as carnivores get from eating meat less frequently. Parasites like mosquitoes and ticks suck blood but are not considered carnivores. Food chains show the order in which animals eat other plants or animals in an ecosystem, with plants always

What animals eat? What do animals eat?

All animals need food for energy and growth. Many animals eat plants only. Cows eat grass, giraffes eat leaves, snails so eat leaves and aphids feed on plant sap (juice). These animals are called plant-eaters or herbivores.

Other animals eat meat only. Lions hunt grazing animals and hyenas eat the leftovers. Eagles eat mice or snake and spiders eat small insects. We call these animals meat-eaters or carnivores. Some animals eat both plants and animals. Mice, baboons and jackals, for example eat fruit and insects. Many people eat meat and vegetables. We call these animals (including ourselves) omnivores The shape of animals teeth depends on what they eat. What differences can you see in the teeth in the pictures below?

Why do herbivores eat all day?

Have you noticed how animals such as cows and buck eat almost all day, while hunting animals, herbivores lion, feed only once a day or even less? To get the same amount of energy from plant, herbivores need to eat more food.

Mosquitoes, ticks and fleas

Animals that eat only blood or suck blood are not called carnivores, because they do not kill the animal whose blood they suck. They are called parasites.

The food chain

The aphid eats plant. The ladybird eats the aphid. The praying mantis eats the lady bird. The bird eats the praying mantis. The order of which animals eat plants or other animals in the environment is called a food chain for example

Prey, predators and plants

In a food chain, the animals that are hunted and eaten are called the prey. The animals that do the hunting are called the predators. A carnivore is always at the top of the food chain and plants are always at the bottom of the food chain. All animals eat plants, or animals that eat plants. All animals depend on plants for food and survival.
