His favorite Christmas memory is also his favorite gift. In 1971, he was 9 years old, his brother was 11, and his sister was 8. In November of that year, my father had a heart attack. My father made it through the surgery, and 40 days later on Christmas Day my father came home . We had no presents under the tree. We didnt have much money, because of my father missing work. By Madison Phillips and Angeline Gatto

Every February 14th loved ones around the world give flowers, candy, and cards to each other. Legend states that St. Valentine was a priest who served in 3rd century Rome. Emperor Claudius II decided single men were better soldiers than married men. But St. Valentine still continued to perform marriages, and Claudius ordered that he be put to death. They also say he was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailers daughter. He sent the first valentine to her and ended the letter with Your Valentine. Thats how Valentines cards were started.

Aphrodite and St. Valentine

Valentines Day and Aphrodite have a lot in common, because Valentines Day is all about what she stood for, though Aphrodite and the founder of Valentines Day, St. Valentine have a lot of differences. Aphrodite was the mythological Greek goddess of love and beauty, while St. Valentine was a real man who became a saint after he was martyred. He is the patron of love, young people, and happy marriages. Legend says Aphrodite was born from the chopped-up corpse of Uranus, the father of the Titans and god of the sky, when his remains were thrown in the ocean. She rose out of the ocean, formed by sea foam, fully grown, though St. Valentine was born like you or I, or any human being. The year he was born is unknown. Aphrodites name is derived from the Greek word aphros, which means sea foam. Aphrodite was so beautiful, that Zeus, lord of the sky and king of the gods, was worried that the gods would fight over her hand in marriage. So, he married her to Hephaestus, god of the forges. Hephaestus made her a magic girdle, and when she wore it, no one could resist her. Even though Hephaestus showered her with gifts, she was not pleased having a dirty, crippled, hard-working god as her husband. Aphrodite was a very popular goddess. She was loved and adored by many mortals. Her feast day, Aphrodisiac, was celebrated highly, especially in Corinth and Athens, while St. Valentines Day is celebrated by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Aphrodite was often associated with the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar. Her sacred symbols were the dolphin, the swan, the pomegranate, and the lime tree. When the Romans conquered Greece, Aphrodite became the Roman goddess Venus. The year St. Valentine died was around 270 A.D. He lived in Roman times, when Aphrodite was called Venus, though he didnt worship her. By: Giovanna Tatananni
