Item Analysis Guide
Item Analysis Guide
Steps: 1. Arrange the test papers by ranking them in order from the highest to the lowest score. 2. Decide the percentage number of students for your test groups. 3. Select high scorers (H) which will serve as your upper percentage test group and the low scorers (L) which will serve as your lower percentage test groups. The number of students depends on the percentage test groups youve decided. 4. Drop the middle papers because you no longer need them for your analysis. 5. Use the Item Analysis Tally Sheet provided. 6. Tabulate the number of high scorers and low scorers who chose each alternative. 7. Compute the Difficulty Index (P) which will represent the percentage of students who got it right. 8. Compute the Item Discriminating Power (D) of each item which will discriminate the high scorers and low scorers from each other. 9. Determine the Option Distracter Index (D0 ) which will indicate how attractive an incorrect answer is to the students.
Total Number of Testees who got the correct answer (T) Total Number of Testee responding to item (N)
High scorers who got the correct answer (H) Low scorers who got the correct answer (L)
Difficulty Index (P) The Difficulty Index (P) indicates the percentage of students who got the correct answer among the two test groups. The result will be multiplied to 100% to get the get the percentage. So that Px100% = P%.
Item Discriminating Power (D) Positive value: When a larger proportion of those in the high scoring group get the item right compared to those in the low scoring group.
Negative Value: When more low scorers than high scorers get the item right.
Zero Value: When an equal number of both test groups get the item right. 1.00: When all high scorers get the item right and all low scorers get the item wrong.
D ranges from -1.00 to 1.00: The higher the D, the better is an item differentiating between high and low achievers.
Opting Distracter Index (D0) Positive value: Good distracters. Negative value: Item must be changed or revised. Zero: Item is not good and should be improved since it failed to distract the low achievers.
