Boiling Point Liquid

The document discusses determining the boiling points of various liquids experimentally. It provides background on boiling point and how pressure affects it. The purpose is stated as determining the boiling points of methanol, ethanol, acetone, and 2-propanol. Ranges of boiling points for each compound are shown from the experiment. Questions about the definition of boiling, how it is affected by pressure, and how boiling point would change at high altitude or in a pressure cooker are also included.

Background: Boiling point is usually determined to find out if the substance tested is pure without any impurities in it by referencing it from previously collected accurate data. It is when a liquid enters the boiling phase ready to turn into a gas. Boiling point is usually a physical property and liquids in a vacuum tend to have a lower boiling point than liquids under pressure. Normal boiling point of a liquid is when the temperature measured when the vapor pressure of the liquid equals one atmosphere. The standard boiling pressure is when the liquids boil less than one bar. Purpose: To determine the boiling point of various liquids experimentally. compound Methanol boiling range boiling range boiling range ethanol boiling range

QuestioQuestions: 1. What is the definition of boiling? Boiling is defined as when the vapor pressure equals the atmospheric pressure around the liquid ,the liquid is said to rapidly change states into gas.

2. How is boiling affected by pressure? Boiling is affected by pressure linearly. As pressure is increased so is the boiling point of a substance . As the pressure is decreased so is the boiling point of the substance.

3.

How would the boiling point of a liquid change by: a) measuring it in Denver (altitude - 5000 ft.)?

The boiling point of the substance will be significantly lower. b) placing the liquid in a pressure cooker?

The boiling point of the liquid will be significantly higher therefore keeping it in a liquid state and cooking faster.

Summary To determine the boiling point of various liquids experimentally. The lab results collected were accurate with the actual boiling points given meaning that the lab was executed with minimal errors. The theoretical errors that could have occurred was not watching as small bubbles formed inside the capillary tube therefore giving a much smaller range for the boiling point. This was the actual error that occurred too and this error actually helped us reduce the range of the boiling point giving us accurate data. Other than that this lab was done with minimal error and carried out wonderfully.
