Functions of The Parts of The Microscope
Eyepiece It contains a convex lens that magnifies the images of the object. It also where the eye is positioned for viewing.
Body tube Holds the lenses in position. Provides a straight path for light rays.
Objective lenses There are three objective lenses, which can be used to magnify the object- low power (x10), medium power (x20) and high power (x30).
Stage and clips A stage is where the object to be viewed is placed- it has a hole at the centre through which light is directed onto the object. The clips hold the slide in place. The stage should be horizontal when the microscope is in use.
Adjustment knobs Used for focusing the object the coarse adjustment knob focuses under low power; the fine adjustment is used to obtain sharp focus under any objective lens.
Handle and base The handle supports the body tube. The base supports the microscope. There are also used when the microscope is carried.
Mirror Reflects light from an outside source and directs it upwards through the diaphragm, stage and lenses.
Hinge or pivot The joint that allows the body tube to be adjusted to suit the sitting posture.
