Comparing Fractional Numbers

The document is an interactive tutorial for comparing fractions. It explains that fractions with the same denominators are called like fractions and the fraction with the larger numerator is greater. Unlike fractions have different denominators; these can be compared by converting them to equivalent fractions with a common denominator. The tutorial provides examples of comparing fractions by looking at numerators of like fractions and denominators of fractions with the same numerators, as well as comparing unlike fractions using a common denominator.

When comparing fractions with the same numerators, look at their denominators. The larger the denominator the smaller the fraction.

NEXT

When comparing unlike fractions with different numerators, rename the fractions with common denominators, making them like fractions.

Next

You can get equivalent fractions with a common denominator by multiplying the numerator and the denominator of each fraction by the denominator of the other.

Next

4 2 7 > 5

2 5
Multiply by 5, the denominator of 2 5 Multiply by 7, the denominator of 4 7

20 = 35

2x7 5x7

Using a common denominator of 35, you can see that 20 is greater than 20 , so 4 is greater than 2 . 35 35 7 5

Multiply by 6, the denominator of 1 6 Multiply by 8, the denominator of 3 8

18 = 48

1x8 6x8

Using a common denominator of 48, you can see that 18 is greater than 8 , so 3 is greater than 1 . 48 48 8 6
