Experiment 8

The document describes a procedure to determine the cloud point of an oil sample. The sample is heated and poured into a bottle, which is then cooled in a water bath. As the temperature drops, the bottle is observed for when the oil becomes cloudy, indicating it has reached the cloud point. The cloud point is recorded once determined through repetition of the procedure. For the given data, the average cloud point was calculated to be 7.5°C.

Reagents and apparatus: Sample bottle(Beatson), thermometer, waterbath Procedure: 1. Dry the sample completely before the testing.

60-75 g of molten oil is filtered using a Whatman No. 1 filter paper. The filtered oil is heated to 130 oC for 5 minutes immediately before making the test. 45mL of heated oil is poured into a sample bottle. 2. The bottle and it content is cooled in the water bath, stirring to keep the temperature uniform. When the sample has reached a temperature about 10 oC above the cloud point, begin stirring rapidly in a circular motion to prevent supercooling and solidification of fat crystal on the side or bottom of the bottle. 3. The test bottle is maintained in such a position that the upper level of the sample in the bottle and the water level in the bath are about the same. 4. The bottle is removed from the bath and inspect regularly. The cloud point is the temperature at which that portion of the thermometer immersed in the oil is no longer visible when viewed horizontally through the bottle and sample. 5. The analysis is repeated using a waterbath temperature set at 5 oC below the cloud point value obtained in the first determination. 6. The cloud point determined from step 5 is recorded. 7. Repeatability standard deviation. Results of repeated determination within a single laboratory by single operator should not differ by more than 0.6 oC.

Abstract: The cloud point of the oil sample can be determined by 3 sample apparatus, which is a thermometer, sample bottle and the waterbath. The cloud point is observed as the oil started to turn cloudy from clear solution formed. The cloud point is determined as 7.5 oC.
