LESSON PLAN
Title of Lesson: Creating book covers with texture and collage Estimated Class Time: Day 1 (60 min) Day 2 (60 min) Day 3 (60 min) Course: Visual Arts/ literacy Curriculum Objectives
The students will: -Explore three dimensional art tecniques -Discuss visual ideas they and others create -Recognize they have unique artistic expression

Body of the Lesson

Day 1:

-Discuss what they saw in the video: How did Eric create texture on the tissue paper? -create a collage by cutting, tearing, sorting, Why did he use tissue paper? overlapping, gluing What is Erics art style? -- Show examples that I have prepared of the demonstrate proper painting behaviour, e.g., finished tissue paper and ask what they think I cooperating with others, correct holding of brush, might have used to create the texture. cleaning brush and applying paint to a surface -- Show the different materials that I brought to class that could help them create the texture apply different brush strokes to suggest lines of and review the textures techniques that we varying thickness and density have been learning about for the past few - recognize that illustrations hold meaning and are weeks.( brushing on the paint and dragging intended to work together with print to tell a story items through it, dabbing things into it ect.) -- I would also explain to them before they begin that they will be creating an art piece with - discuss visual ideas they and others create the tissue using the same techniques that Eric Carle does in the video. He cuts out shapes - describe one artists style and makes a collage to create a character for a book. (they could make an animal, flower, person whatever the main character of their Background Information story will be, so they need to keep this in mind when choosing their colors and texture) Show student a video of Eric Carle demonstrating his collage technique. It explains the background of his book The -- I would then pass out the tissue paper, paint, brushes, water cups and paper towel. Very Hungry Caterpillar

Vocabulary

Day 3:

Collage- overlapping of pictures or paper to create a larger picture or display. Decoupage- glue

Day 2:
Tissue paper is dry, students can come collect their papers. Let them know that it is ok to share their paper with others if another color is needed. - Give the students cardstock for the cover of their book. - They then need to lightly draw their character on the cardstock where they want to. - Remind them to leave room for the title of their book, author and illustrators name. - Show them examples of Eric Carles different characters. (see Power point presentation) - Model how to draw a shape on the tissue paper and cut it out. (They would have also seen this on the video the day before) - Give them time to cut out their pieces and arrange them where they want them. - Remind them what a collage is. (Many pieces of paper overlapping the next piece to create a picture) - Once students begin to finish this step show them the decoupage and how to apply it. (Read them the directions on the bottle and model it for them) -Circulate to answer any questions, help with supplies, and encourage creativity. -Finish 5 minutes early to allow time for proper cleanup. -These will need to dry until the next art class. -

Today they will write their stories. They would have begun this in their literacy block and now need to do a good copy into their books. Give them time to do the good copy, remind them that this will be a published book so they need to do their best when printing their stories. As the students finish up it is then time to put the whole book together. Allow the student to use their imaginations of how the want to assemble the book (binding, ribbon?) There are many supplies around the room that they are able to useif they can dream itthey can achieve what they want it to look like.

-Circulate to answer any questions, help with supplies, and encourage creativity. -Finish 5 minutes early to allow time for proper cleanup.

Accommodation / Modification -Provide precut materials (Acc.) -Provide Pictures for the student (Acc.)

Summary and Closure The final activity that I would do is to have an Authors Celebration. The students will display their books, they can invite friends and family to come see them and the students will have the chance to read their books aloud. We would also serve cookies and juice of course!

Assessment I will provide them with a check list that they can use as they are going through the process so that they know what my expectations are. While circulating I will conference with them about their art and help them fill out the checklist. This will help them self evaluate their project. Their published book will be compared to that checklist for assessment.
