Third Generation (3G) : by B. Sai Kiran (05311A0532)

This document discusses the evolution of mobile phone generations from 1G to 3G. First generation (1G) networks used analog signaling and were designed for voice calls. Second generation (2G) networks digitized signals and introduced technologies like GSM, providing data rates up to 9.6 kbps. 2G+ networks enhanced 2G with packet-based services like GPRS and EDGE to increase data speeds. Third generation (3G) networks unified standards and provided multimedia and internet access at data rates up to 2 Mbps by integrating core and radio access networks. Future networks will continue enhancing capabilities to support more users and applications.

THIRD GENERATION(3G)

by B. Sai Kiran(05311A0532)

INTRODUCTION

What happened in earlier Generations?

Purpose for learning 3G

FIRST GENERATION(1G)
Based on analog signalling, were known as Analog Mobile Phone Systems (AMPS),
Analog systems were primarily based on circuit-switched technology and designed for voice, not data.

SECOND GENERATION(2G)

Based on low-band digital data signalling

Popularly known as Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) which uses 25 MHZ.

GSM technology is a combination of FDMA and TDMA.

2G

Today, GSM systems operate in the 900MHz and 1.8 GHz bands throughout the world with the exception of the America
Provides the data rate of up to 9.6 kbps, but it is not suitable for web browsing and multimedia applications.

Subscribers Worldwide

2G+

packet-based and increases the data communication speeds to as high as 384kbps. High Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE)

GPRS OVERVIEW

GPRS NETWORK

3G

Unifies existing cellular standards, such as CDMA, GSM, and TDMA, under one umbrella.
Immediate access to location-specific services that offer information on demand

3G

consist of a Radio Access Network (RAN) and a core network.

The Radio Access Network consists of Node B and Radio Network Controllers (RNCs).

History of Mobile Phones

Conclusion :

Future wireless networks will need to support diverse IP multimedia applications to allow sharing of resources among multiple users. The fourth generation promises to fulfill the goal of PCC (personal computing and communication)a vision that affordably provides high data rates everywhere over a wireless network
