Abstract Edit

The document discusses identifying cutting forces during machining operations in order to control tool wear and vibration, improve tool life and part quality. Face milling is a common machining operation used for plane milling where material is removed. It is important to study how cutting parameters impact variations in cutting forces during face milling of medium carbon steel. A mathematical model was developed to determine specific cutting pressures, assuming cutting force is proportional to chip cross section area. A comparison of the model to experimentation is presented. This model and analysis can be used to predict tool wear, surface quality, and select optimal process parameters for achieving a stable face milling process.

(First paragraph as in the report)

The cutting forces exerted by the cutting tool on the work piece during a machining action to be identified in order to control the tool wear and occurrence of vibration, thus to improve tool life and quality of components. Modeling of cutting force coefficients in face milling is often needed in machining automation. Face milling is one of the most common machining operations in manufacturing industries. Face milling includes face finishing, material removal etc. face milling is the main method of plane molding and its processing quality depends upon flatness error. Hence it is important to study the prediction of the effects of cutting parameters on the variations of cutting forces during face milling operation of medium Carbon Steel material. Cutting forces are measured indirectly for various feed rates spindle speeds and depth of cuts using in build sensors in CNC machine tool. In this study mathematical modeling is been developed to determine the specific cutting pressures assuming cutting force is proportional to the chip cross section area. A comparison between modeling and experiment is presented. This model and analysis are useful not only for predicting the tool wear, surface quality but also for selecting optimum process parameters for achieving the stability of the face milling process. (Continue with Second Para as in report) Accurate modeling of the cutting coefficients and surface roughness will results in prediction of cutting force, surface quality and stability of machining process. Optimum selection of cutting parameters will result in setting optimal machining variables for adaptive control systems to improve the production rate and part quality.
