R&D R & D complex is the in-house research and development wing of BHEL, Tiruchirapalli.

Heat Transfer (Supercritical Tests Facility) & Frontier Technology, Coal Combustion(Coal Research Center), Coal Gasification (Combined Cycle Demonstration Plant -CCDP), Boiler Dynamics and Collaborative Development at IITM Research Park jointly constitute the unified R&D. Research has yielded various products like FBC boilers, HRSG, DB, DIPC, Split coal nozzles, Flyash disposal system, SWBS etc. which have been successfully commercialised. R&D has also pioneered processes like RLA study for extending the life of powerplants, chemical cleaning of boilers, effluent treatment systems etc.

Preamble: The Supercritical test facility is a advanced Research facility established by BHEL Trichy to study the heat transfer characteristics at super critical pressure conditions (>221 bar) and at sub-critical conditions. The test facility will enable BHEL to simulate the boiler operating conditions at the design stage itself to ensure reliable operation High capacity super critical once through boilers. The test section is the heart of the system where a single tube is electrically heated to simulate the design or operating conditions. Both evaporator and super heater sections can be simulated. The required pressure of the system is initially raised by a piston pump by filling in the system through pressuriser and accumulator. The circulating pump takes care of the circulation of the water during the test period. The Regenerative heat exchangers are used to preheat the fluid using the outgoing fluid of the test section. Two electrical pre heaters are used to achieve the desired fluid temperature at the test section. The ambient heat exchangers are used to cool the water to a temperature acceptable to the circulating pump. The evaporator/super heater condition of the boiler is simulated by passing a direct current through the tube. The metal temperatures at various locations are monitored for any abnormal increase for various flow, pressure and heat flux conditions. The maximum parameters for study in the test section are as given below: Pressure Temperature Heat flux : : : 400 bar 700c 1000 kW / m
