13th July 2012 MEDIA RELEASE FROM OASIS Oasiss SE1 Free School Application is approved by the Department

for Education
Oasis Community Learning is delighted to announce that its application to open a secondary Free School in Waterloo has been approved by the Department for Education. The new school, to be called Oasis Academy South Bank, will open with an initial intake of 120 Year 7 students in September 2013. The Oasis Academy South Bank is one of 102 new Free Schools to be approved by the Department for Education. Following a public consultation earlier this year, the application was supported by over 300 members of the local community, as well as Kate Hoey MP, Peter Truesdale, Diana Braithwaite and Gavin Dodsworth Bishops Ward Councillors, Iain Tuckett - Group Director of Coin Street Community Builders, Kevin Spacey and Hugh Jenkinson of the Old Vic Theatre, Loretta Minghella, Director of Christian Aid, and many influential local community groups including WaCoCo and WCDG. The Oasis Academy South Bank will be for students aged 11-16 years, with four forms of entry, opening with an intake of 120 Year 7 students next September. It will cover the National Curriculum and prepare students for national tests and examinations at all levels. The school will be fully inclusive, accepting children irrespective of faith or ability. The Oasis Academy South Bank will help meet the anticipated shortfall of secondary places in the immediate area, and relieve pressure on other secondary schools in the south of the borough. Oasis will work with the London Borough of Lambeth to coordinate admissions for the school. Oasis is confident that it will be able to secure a suitable site in the area and will now move to finalise this. An announcement confirming the location of the school will be made shortly.

Open Evenings for the school for prospective Year 7 students and their families will be held at the Oasis Centre, 75 Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7HS on: Tuesday 18th September 6pm-8pm Wednesday 17th October 6pm-8pm Steve Chalke, Oasis Founder said: I am thrilled that Oasis has been given the opportunity to open a brand new secondary school in Waterloo. For more than 30 years this has been something which local families have longed and hoped for. This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the area as we work with many business and community partners to develop an innovative curriculum as well as a wide range of extra-curricular enriching activities for local young people. I would like to thank all those who have supported our proposal. Their support has made this possible. We look forward to working together as we move forward. ENDS 1
