COACHES NOTES
FRANK VACCARO - Head Coach
Wow, summer is over and we are starting another year! I am looking forward to having a solid freshman class coming in who are ready to go after it. As we all know, swimming and diving is a long season. A few of our highlights include our Hamline Invite on November 5th and the "Hour of Power" Relay in honor of Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. Funds raised through this event support research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people. When the Hour of Power began in 2006, 15 teams joined together to raise team spirit, sarcoma awareness and $11,000. In 2010, the number of participating teams exploded to 146 on three continents, including 102 college and university programs, 37 high school & club teams, and seven students-abroad teams, and in 2010, these almost 7,000 athletes raised $75,000 for the Fund. In its first five years the Hour of Power has raised $265,000. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, 5 p.m. we will join teams in St. Paul at Macalester Riley pool. Our December invite at St. Thomas is sure to have loads of fast swims as the MIAC teams try to get as many cuts as possible for the conference meet. This will be our last meet before finals and break. Over holiday break we are heading to Mesa, Arizona and will be attending the Citrus Classic on Friday December 30th. We will have eight 2-hour and two 3-hour practices in the Skyline Aquatics Center. When we return it will be J-Term, and before you know it we will be at MIACs. It is sure to be an exciting year! Please come out and catch the wave!

2011-2012

Hot Town, Summer in the City

Saint Paul was definitely a Hot Town this summer with heat waves of 100 + degrees daily. Luckily the end is in sight and we can look forward to twelve feet of snow in the next month Hamlines swim and dive team was still kicking strong with members coaching our tri-training program and leading activity groups as camp counselors for our AllSports Camp, hosted on Hamlines campus each summer. Not only were they still active on campus, they also had a couple team bonding days for the current athletes as well as incoming first-years.

2011Season
This season we are bringing in a large class of first years, which is awesome as our numbers have been on the small side the last couple years. We will have 13-15 on the womens team and 8-10 on the mens team. Even though numbers havent been as high as we would like them to be, the future looks bright and we are very excited about the 2011-2012 season.

Training Trip
For our training trip this year we have decided to take the team to Arizona!! Not only will we be able to train and become stronger and faster we will also be competing at the Citrus Classic swim meet in Mesa on the 30th of December at the Kino Aquatic Center. This will be a very exciting trip as some of our rival teams will be in the city for the meet as well: Augsburg College and Gustavus Adolphus College. If any of our Alums live in the area, you are more than welcome to come cheer!! To help pay for our trip, the team will be doing some fundraising activities this year:

*** Spirit wear is also available. We are selling hats, towels, tshirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. If you are interested please send me an email and we will hook you up! *** Take care and Go Pipers!
PS The new starting blocks are installed and they look fabulous!!!!!!

Twin Cities Marathon (10/2/11) The Hamline Swim & Dive team has been volunteering for the marathon for many years. Im not sure when we started exactly, but weve been part of the clean up crew for quite a while. While most of the swimmers have never trained to run 5 miles, let alone 26, which is usually what it comes down to as we remove trash, clothing and tables from the streets after the runners have gone by with the odd lunch or bathroom break to catch our breaths. Its gross, its smelly, sometimes it rains, and its awesome! 4 Annual Naked Mile (10/8/2011) This event began at the start of the 2008-2009 season. Inspiration came from a picture Coach Frank had in his office his first year at Hamline: The Merchant Marine Academy swim team running around a track in nothing but their swim suits, caps and goggles. Each dollar raised represents a lap around the track, so for every dollar someone puts on a swimmer thats how many laps he/she has to run. Our version is similar, though we set up an obstacle course on campus instead of running around the track. On-lookers can purchase water balloons for 50 cents to throw at the runners. To promote this activity, swimmers sit in the caffeteria during the lunch hour and goad fellow students to make them run.

Things to look forward to:

Tri-Training: We want to continue our triathlon training program through the school year, though the hours are going to be limited to Sundays rather than every day. Times TBD, but you are interested in training please contact us and we can keep you informed as to when the practice schedule is completed. This should start in October. Swim Lessons: If you have a child that still needs to go through swim lessons or would like to continue their swimming and water safety education, let us know! We are going to be holding semi-private lessons every Sunday beginning in October. Instructors will use a modified Red Cross training to teach. For more information please contact our office at 651-523-2033 or [email protected] We will get in touch with you about lessons in the next couple of weeks!
