Scouting Report
Jam vs. Toros _01.13.11 | 13-Jan-2012

Our Opponent
Austin is in first place in the Western Conference with a 14-3 record. They have won 9 straight games. They are a balanced team that uses paint drives and post feeds to pressure the basket and create open shots for spot up shooters. They move the ball well and crash the boards on every shot opportunity. They are ranked 2nd in the league in offensive rebounding, averaging 14.7 per game. MULTIPLE EFFORTS on the defensive end will be key for us to finish possessions. They lead the league in FT attempted per game (31.3 attempts per game) and also lead in FT percentage (77.1%.) In two of their losses, the winning team has shot more FTs than the Toros. They are a solid halfcourt defensive team, who will always look to push tempo off defensive stops. They rank 2nd in the league in Fastbreak Points with 18 points per game. Defensively, they want to keep the ball on one side of the floor to limit ball reversals. We must punish their defense and get what we want by using MULTIPLE ATTACKS on offense like we did against Idaho.

Keys to Win

WE WILL WIN BY EXECUTING THE 4 P's: 1. PROTECT THE PAINT--> Get back in transition and keep Dentmon out of the paint. 2. PURSUE THE REBOUND --> Finish the play with a blockout and keep Dawson and Thomas off the O-Boards. 3. PRESSURE & POINT OF PICKUP --> PIck their PGs up early to wear them out. Extreme ball pressure in the sideline alley to minimize ball reversal. 4. PUNISH THEM WITH OUR PACE --> They are short-handed and we are at our best when we push the pace.

WIN THE FREE THROW BATTLE: Against Idaho, we made more free throws than they shot. That was key in us getting the win. The same will ring true when we play Austin.

"HIDDEN POINTS" ON DEFENSE THAT WILL KEEP THEM OFF THE LINE:

BIGS: Must force the offensive players off their spots two steps to lower their percentages and to take them out of their scoring zone. GUARDS: Must defeat screens, closeout with great angles and BE THERE ON THE CATCH to avoid getting beat and fouling for being out of position.

TRANSITION DEFENSE: They pride themselves (as we do) on getting stops and then running the break from that point. PGs must lead and give reminders on FLOOR BALANCE every time we take a shot. "BACK" must get all the way to the PAINT. "TOP" must pick up the ball before it crosses 1/2 court. CONTROL DENTMON: Pick him up early and make him work to get the ball up and take time off the shot clock. 1-on-1 defense will be key. Square him up and make him EARN all of his points. He is third in the league 7 FTA per game, and shoots 89.5% FT.

Scouting Report
Jam vs. Toros _01.13.11 | 13-Jan-2012

Offensive Keys

"PLAY WITH SPACE AND WITH PACE": They are at their weakest in transition defense. Run off stops and get a piece of the paint to create great looks. "SECOND-SIDE-SWEEP": If we do not get what we want in transition, the next most important thing is the consistency with which we are able to attack the 2nd and 3rd side of the floor.

PGs should run 4C on the left side of the floor so they can attack with their left when Austin tries to PUSH on the P/R. From there, engage the big, and then kick to the trail post, who will swing it to the second side. At that point, our wings can catch and sweep baseline and attack with their strong hand. ATTACK DAWSON AND THEIR BIGS TO DRAW FOULS. We average 24.7% FG when we do not get a piece of the paint. That number goes up to 52.4% FG after just one piece of the paint, and 87.5% FG when we get two pieces of the paint or more. We will punish Austin and get to the FT line with paint touches on offense.

THEIR RUB P/R DEFENSE: They will PUSH all RUB screens and keep it locker in to one side. Guards must come off the screen to looking to attack the rim on every play and then kick to the second side to create closeout attacks. THEIR SIDELINE ROLL DEFENSE: They will PUSH all SIDELINE P/R. ZONE OFFENSE: They will play 2-3 matchup zone out of time outs. We can run Zone Rub, Zone Twist, 4C. The key is to get multiple pieces of the paint. The first man to drive is the "lead blocker" who will create the opportunities for all of his teammates around him. We were a perfect 5-for-5 against Idaho's zone when we got two pieces of the paint.

Defensive Keys

POST DEFENSE: Win the HIDDEN POINTS by meeting them early and forcing them off the block and off their scoring spots. They will isolate Eric Dawson (#34) and Lance Thomas (#24) in the post. They also use the post up to create 3 pointers on the weakside off defensive help.

PREVENTION: Beat them down the floor and MEET THEM at the FT LINE to prevent the RIM RUN. 3/4 DENY FROM THE TOP SIDE until the BALL GETS BELOW FT LINE and then 3/4 DENY FROM THE LOWSIDE. PISTOLS: They score an average of 8 points off post cuts after a post feed. JUMP TO THE PASS and DON'T GET FACE CUT. It is key for the guard to GET OFF and CREATE SPACE on the POST FEED, to avoid being back cut. They are great at making the pass late on the cut if the defense relaxes. Weakside players will flash in as well when the ball is in the post.

PINDOWNS: "GAP" to DENY and disrupt their wings. Bigs be ready for their PIG action. RUB P/R DEFENSE: "SHOW" two hard slides, "FREEZE" and then get "BACK". Solomon can "GAP" all P/R, but PGs must fight over the top vs. Dentmon and Sanders either way. SIDELINE P/R DEFENSE: "PUSH" and force the ball down the sideline. SIDELINE PIN and get 5 IN THE BOX. Low hole must also be ready to stunt if we are beaten off the dribble.

Quick & aggressive PG. Top 10 in the league in both scoring and assists. Attacks in transition. Will over penetrate and turn the ball over, so don't give up on any plays. Wants to live in the paint and finish himself or kick out to open shooters. Can and will drive both ways but is better going right and finishing right. Will curl off pindowns. Loves to attack closeouts and scores 52% of his points from ISO situations. Wlll force shots. WIll shoot if you go under on ballscreens or fail to closeout. If he can get you off balance he likes to shot fake and draw fouls. Gets to the free throw line a lot (2nd in the league in FTA). SCORER: Can beat you in a lot of ways. Pick him up early and pressure him at all times. Make him use his left hand. Don't let him get in a rhtyhm. #11 Jamarr Sanders

Quick triggered wing player. Has seen minutes at the 2 and the 3, when they go smaller. Constantly moving off the ball to get separation for his shot. Will come off screens & DHO's looking to fire. Very good free throw shooter that will use head/ball fakes to try to get you up in the air and draw contact. Looks to run in transition for lay-ups or spot up 3pt opportunities. Weakside crasher on the O-Boards. SHOOTER: Pressure him. Ride on pin-downs & run him off the 3pt line. Force him to put it on the deck and finish at the rim going left.

Long and athletic forward that has seen time at the 3 and as a stretch 4. Fills the wing on the break. Threat to crash the offensive glass from the weakside. Has range to 3, but feels most comfortable around the college 3pt line. When he puts the ball on the floor he's looking for 1 or 2 dribble pull ups into mid-range jumpers. Not a great finisher at the rim but will look to draw contact, so don't bail him out with fouls. SHOOTER: Pressure him everywhere. Ride him on screens and run him off the 3pt line if you have to. Force him to his left but stay pressured to contest his mid-range pull up jumpers. #24 Lance Thomas

Long and athletic. Can play and defend multiples positions (3-5). Heart and soul of the team. High BBIQ and is very vocal. Great rebounder on both ends. Can get out and run on the break. Face-up post player that will catch on the block or elbows and looks to attack going to his right. Will flash into the high post from the weakside. Also likes to basket cut if you lose pistols. Not a strong perimeter shooter but can make open jump shots to 18 feet. Great passer to cutters out of the post. ENERGY/DEFENDER: Treat him as a right hand driver in the halfcourt. Clog off & keep in front, force him into jump shots. Make him finish with his left hand in the post or around the basket. Must keep him off the O-Boards. #34 Eric Dawson

Strong, tough post player. Very good offensive rebounder that uses his strength to push you under the rim. Can defend in the post but has trouble when asked to to defend Pick & Roll, as he doesn't slide well. Spends most of his time in the post. Has a soft touch and likes to use it to take face up and turnaround jumpers. Will lower his shoulder to create space and finish with his right hand. Mid-range shooter out to 17 feet and Picks and Pops to these spots. POST/MID-RANGE SHOOTER: Force him two steps off the paint. Pressure him and make him drive with his left hand. Be ready to contest his jumpers. Force him to finish with his left hand at all times. Box him out. Pressure him and make him drive with his left hand.

Skilled swingman. Has good size and strength. Struggling athletically since his knee injury. We should be able to pressure him. Attack him on offense. Settling for a lot of contested jumpshots right now because he can't create space for himself or get a lot of lift. Better from mid-range than 3 but overall only an average shooter, so only a hand contest is needed. Will post up and is looking for short turnaround jumpers over both shoulders. Better right hand driver than left, so send him to his left. MID-RANGE SHOOTER: Pressure him as much as possible. Send him to his left hand and make him finish over length at the rim. Undersized forward that plays with tons of energy. Aggressive defender and attacks the offensive glass. Poor ballhandler that rarely puts the ball on the floor. Has no left hand. Long and athletic forward. May also see some time at the 5 due to recent injuries. Looking for tip-ins on the O-Boards. Average defender that we should be able to attack. A career 39% 3pt shooter in the D-League, mostly in catch & shoot situations. Picks and pops the vast majority of the time. Doesn't shoot well off the dribble so when he puts it on the floor he's going to the rim looking for fouls, but also a guy we can take charges against. Usually comes back to right hand finishes in the post. SHOOTER: Must be there on the catch. If he gets hot, run him off. Force him to put it on the floor with his left hand. Do not bail him out with fouls. Finish plays with a box out.
