Lomo Link magazine is the brain child of Lomo Link Group International, an organisation with main vision-focused on Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality. This historic portal was formed on the backdrop of a purpose underpinning the essence of Tourism as it embraces travel, leisure and hospitality. The magazine will essentially target areas like culture and tradition, travel, diasporic community, success stories, international education, health, beauty, fashion and style etc. This inaugural edition focuses on issues on Culture and Tourism around West Africa. Our team of experts have carried out a tremendous research on the Island of Sao Tome and Principe; an oil-rich state which also blessed with natural tropical scenery rivalling with great tourist nations worldwide. We have brought our spotlights on this unsung nation; blessed with unusual natural and mineral resources. Sao Tome and Principe is a paradise on earth to see, mostly indescribable, you can only visit personally to be able to appreciate the wonders nature has endowed this little Island on the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago of Sao Tome and Principe is an exclusive destination, safe, calm, unique and unparallel, filled with exoticism, magic warmth, joy and hospitality. Its the proud harbour for the centre of the world where time seems to come to stand, a place to castaway for the weekend; where temperature is ideal at anytime of the year, with pristine beaches and crystal clear water. Unreserved appreciation goes to the entire Board and Management of Air Nigeria for opening Sao Tome to the wide world on the 8th August 2011, which has yielded the emancipation of the government of the country in the area of trade and commercial activities across the entire African states. A unique tribute is paid to The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) for its unflinching effort towards improving Nigeria infrastructures. Our editorial team was able to break through the tight protocol so as to be able to bring the activity of this great association to public view. The period coincidentally coincides with the period of the inauguration ceremony of its 28th President. This special edition also feature the activities that happened at the last Abuja Carnival, this was well documented and brought to you courtesy of one of our noble contributing editor, Ijeoma Njioke. She employed absolute professionalism while discharging her role on this event. A Nigerian reputable International Cuisine with branches in London and Abuja named 805 is also showcased. The restaurant is identified with unusual hospitality decorum which deserves spotlights as well.
Cara Harshman popularly known as Titilayo Oyinbo is also a mystery in this edition. She is an American who learnt Yoruba Language in America, and travel to Nigeria for her research fieldwork. She speaks Yoruba language so fluently that you could not see her skin colour anymore, be her guest on the interview she granted Yomi Ojo, on the journey called Culture Tongue. Bisola Abodunrin, our senior correspondence wrote on Culture in the Air. This presents her experience while she travels between London and Nigeria, something that has become a memorable event in her life. We hope you get entertained with this her personal story. We would like to appreciate the Chairman of Air Nigeria, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim; the CEO Air Nigeria Mr Kinfe Kashaye, Commercial Director Air Nigeria and the entire management and staff at Air Nigeria for your support towards the fruition of this edition. Many thanks to both Lomo Link Group editorial and administrative team members for their painstaking efforts, the Sao Tome and Principle Board of Tourism and Pestana Group, you have all contributed immensely to the success of this first edition of Lomo Link magazine. igerian Society of Engineers (NSE) takes giant stride towards confronting some of the impediments that face infrastructural developments in Nigeria. The Society has determined to re-channel its efforts toward the provision of an able environment filled with social amenities that will add value to the lives of the countrys citizens and visitors, as well as championing effective beautiful and well discerning atmosphere

that will attract tourism the way it is experienced in the developed world and great tourists nations.
The effect of Tourism on national growth and development of a country cannot be under estimated. Examples are not farfetched when one begins to look at nations in the developed world like Great Britain; United States of America; F rance; Germany; Italy; Brazil; China; Mexico; Spain to mention but a few. Asides the above, some other tourist
world like Barbados; Bahamas; St Lucia; Cyprus; Singapore and some others are making positive contributions towards making their countries look splendid to create special appeal requires for visitors to appreciate. It is necessary to mention that some of the major factors that contribute to discernment of an environment are the landmarks and infrastructures present; simply because they make lives very comfortable for both residents and the
www.lomolink.com
visitors. In addition, these countries try as much as possible to make their atmospheres invitingly beautiful; in this way visitors can always make a positive referral to others which in turns yield dividends in the end.
In order to build a nation ready for visitors like tourists, efficient security plays a big role followed by a discerning atmosphere with all basic necessities. A very good quality infrastructure must be in place; it is a key ingredient for sustainable development. Countries that will do well in tourism must provide efficient sanitation; reliable energy and communication systems; provision of water; good roads; effective aviation, rail and water transports, these will help in providing a decent standard of living for the people. All of these can then be followed with great landscapes, architectural masterpieces, well kept monumental buildings and structure which are part of the beautification of our spaces and environment. The role of Engineers in the process of growth and development of a nation are very vital, they are directly involved in the process and facilitation of making infrastructures possible. The Nigeria Society of Engineers has been contributing relentlessly towards Nigeria Vision 2020. It has been engaging the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agencies on the way forward towards the attainment of uplifting the country to greater heights in its infrastructural development. Recently, the members brainstormed on effective transportation system in Nigeria, which they tagged The way forward. It was a forum to create discourse and generate ideas and recommendations on how the country can develop through improved and effective transport system. They took the advantage of the conference to dissect the anatomy of transportation mode and infrastructure. The basic aim of this aspiration is to keep a focal point on the challenges in the transportation sector and make provisions for engineering responses and answers for a worthy transportation system in Nigeria. Nigerian Society of Engineers for making available suitable advice and guidance towards attainment of necessary infrastructure for the government. To further boost the initiatives of the Nigerian Society of Engineers along the line of infrastructural development for Nigerians and its potential visitors, the Society of late has began a discussion on how there could be a partnership agreement with The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), a move initiated by the agency so as to create a good avenue to challenge the neglects of the major highways across the country. It is pertinent to have a maintenance culture and scheme that will look after the countries roads and other infrastructures. If this is well put in place, it will be an added value as new projects are being developed, while old ones are well protected.
Nigerian Society of Engineers through its leadership recently re-emphasised to the federal government of Nigeria on the importance of its reaction towards various recommendations made by the Society via the Committee on Strategic Plans for Engineering development and Control in Nigeria. The President of the Society regretted that the government
Amongst the suggestions made by The Nigerian Society of Engineers to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a road map towards infrastructural development in Nigeria are the following:
Construction Industry sector must be well defined. Just like it entails in the developed world, economy is being boosted or maintained through the implementation of construction projects. Nigeria needs to develop a lots of high level of construction projects to build infrastructure require, and these must reflect in the man power process which accommodate Nigerian professionals. The Society demands a revisit and implementation of the National Construction Policy of 1991, where it says that the development of the home grown Nigerian Construction Companies is a mandatory obligation the government must honestly commit the nation building. Road Transport needs urgent attention from the presidency. There is a need to separate Operational matters on roads from Policy ones, and create as early as possible the Federal Highways Authority, and a Federal F und in line with the way it is done in developed nations. This corresponds with the way it is with Federal Ministry of Transport, and the Nigeria Railway Corporation. Also, significant measures should be taken towards the control of axle loads on the country roads for longevity.
has failed to implement the recommendation, as he believes the development of Engineering as part of nation building lies within the execution of the recommendation. The Secretary to the Government responded positively in regards to that, and the government will look into it urgently, because it believes that the country is in dire needs of a National Construction Policy to pilot the provision of Infrastructural development. He commended the pivotal role playing by the members of the
Manpower development needs be developed. A proactive step should be taken by the Government in partnering with professional bodies. A home based professional capacity is required if sustainable development within the infrastructure, Manufacturing and other sectors of the economy is to be achieved.

Electric Power is an area of serious emphasis by the Society. The engineers had a round table talk with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission in March 2011, where they expressed that the Power Sector Reform Roadmap needs an urgent attention. They want the reform document be passed to National Assembly for promulgation into energy law, so that every successive regime will find it mandatory for implementation.
Rail Transport has been advised by The Society of Engineers to be signed on to private investors so as to allow the Sector become functional. These set of people can be encouraged to create a modern gauge and high speed railway system across the country. Standing law however must be ratified here as well to be sure of its implementation.
Aviation sector need be developed. The Society believes the Government need to continue to improve on Airport upgrade

and safety if it is to cope with pressure of proliferation in air travel in Nigeria. It is essentials to develop local capacity in this sector and this must be done in no distant time. It is compulsory for the Government to make possible a process that will ensure aviation regulations are strictly adhere. Water Transport is such an area of development that cannot be neglected. The Society of Engineers endears the Government to make it a commitment to create a forum where water transport will become a major means of ferrying passengers, goods and cargo through various parts of the country, which will be served by the Nigerian inland water ways. The most lucrative means of doing this is through the public/private investors, once a good policy and proposal are put in place.
as it advises the Federal Government in its report. The Engineers believe there is a need for more housing scheme for nation building and resourcefulness. The body advised the Government to fund properly and encouraged The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, this will allow them to be able to woo the investors who will invest in moderate cost commercial production of building materials instead of importations. Leveraging Technology should be an area of focus by the President. They advise he should tap into the numerous well qualified professionals Nigerians in this sector. In that way he can update government system using Technocrats discharging his responsibility. Comprehensive Information Technology is one area so important that cannot be ignored if a nation or business is to thrive in this current age. Ethics and Value is another point the Nigerian Society of Engineers hammered upon. They believe the President must try to make it a mandatory process for due process. They said that as Engineers they know that the truth lies at the heart of all the true leadership. With all mentioned above, one could depict there is a lot going on for infrastructural development, which means if there is good implementation programme there would be a way for effective development of Tourism in the country, Travel, Leisure and Hospitality industry will begin to grow, National revenue increases, all of these courtesy of The Nigerian Society of Engineer.

Lomo Link: A bit introduction of yourself sir: Engr. Shehu: I was born on 12th April 1963 to a Veterinary Officer Alhaji Shehu Salihu and Hajiya Rakiya, both of blessed memory. I had my primary education in Jahun, Sumaila and finally Kwalli Primary School in Kano which I finished in 1975. My father died when I was 12 years old and thus starting to face challenges of life from the tender age. After finishing my primary education, I got admitted into prestigious Government College Kaduna in September 1975 under the Kano State Government scholarship. When I finished secondary school I was admitted into the School of Basic Studies, of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1980. Having finished the one year course successfully, I was then absorbed in the same University to study Electrical Engineering degree which I completed successfully in 1985. F rom here I proceeded to Enugu for NYSC where I had my primary assignment at Electrical Inspectorate Division, Federal Ministry of Mine & power. My experience at National Youth Service exposed me to understand difference in both social behaviour and cultural differences across the ethnicity of Nigeria, which I believe is great for the scheme. Amongst my other further appointments include NEPA Lagos Thermal Station for 2 years, between; 1986 1988, and Kano State Rural Electrification Board which was from 1988 1990. I am the Chairman/CEO MBS Engineering Ltd, and blessed with two wives and nine children. Lomo Link: Sir, can you run a bit profile of this organisation? I mean, since when it started; the mission behind it; its objective and so on: Engr. Shehu: Nigerian Society of Engineers was established in 1958 by a
group of Nigeria engineers in London, who believed the purpose of engineering should be felt in Nigeria. One of the prominent founding members was Engr.G.O Awerioba. After successful entry into Nigeria from UK, the Society base was relocated to Abeokuta from Lagos simply because of the negative agitation by the government. In the end, the initial frustration later turned out to be a blessing. The main vision for the Society by the founding fathers is to make it one of the very best professional engineering bodies in the world. The 3 mission statements for the Society are:
1. NSE is dedicated to providing quality service, enhancing professional competence and developing members at all times. 2. NSE is committed to forecast in influencing and providing quality advice to various arms of government, industry, com-
32
www.lomolink.com
merce, academics and the entire society for the purpose of uplifting the country at large. 3. NSE shall make meaningful contribution to the development of technology worldwide. NSE has produced 27 President so far. Lomo Link: Do you do certification in any form? Engr. Shehu: There are four categories of membership. We have student membership; Graduate membership; corporate membership, and fellowship grade. Lomo Link: Who is qualified to be a member of the NSE? And how important is it becoming a member?
Lomo Link: We believe Nigeria is a great nation with a lot of infrastructures, most of these we know engineers are part of the makings. In the irony, many non-Nigerians, Nigerians in the diaspora believe this is untrue; and as a result remain un-encouraged to come to Nigeria or re locate. What do you think about this? As you know people need to be encouraged that Nigeria is great, and from your perspective, how do we encourage everyone towards nation building against the Vision 2020? Engr. Shehu: I cannot say Nigeria is great in terms of infrastructure, but then that is why investors should come in and see how the bridge could be built. However, Nigeria has lots of potential to become great nation, the fact that the infrastructures are not enough that is why people should come in and participate in the development. We encourage most Nigerian graduates abroad including those who were born there calling themselves British, Americans and so on to come back home to try and pay back by trying to help in facilitating development process, nothing is too small. Even, inspiration provision is enough, e.g. doctors providing treatment services, distribution of drugs are contributing, giving seminars, lectures, sharing your knowledge and experience would be great. People in the diaspora should know Nigeria needs them more than their foreign abodes do. NSE is a co-chair of the infrastructure committee of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), through this so many advise has been given to the Federal Government to make sure that infrastructure in the country is being given a priority and also being driven by Nigerians.
Engr. Shehu: Anybody studying engineering in any accredited University is automatically a student member. Anybody who has successfully qualified as a graduate is an automatic graduate member of the Society. In addition to qualifying as an engineer from accredited University, you must practice for 4 years before sitting for NSE professional examination for corporate membership which include both oral and writing test (proficiency, IT and others). All of these are back up with certificates. The certificate of membership will allow you to be registered with COREN a government body established by law of the Federal Government of Nigeria. The fellowship membership comes with several of years of experience after certifications. It is through NSE you continue to develop yourself with continuous professional development program. NSE runs courses, workshops, seminars and conferences to update the engineers to the ever changing trends in the world of engineering. It is pertinent to mention that engineering shares link with the other world professions. Lomo Link: Do you have any representation for your Society in the diasporas, because there are so many qualified Nigerian engineers outside the country? Engr. Shehu: The next phase of development to reach requested for some time now is London branch to be established, also Germany. NSE also wants to look into the logistics of their qualifying process whereby members can take exams in countries like UK without coming to Nigeria. It will only require reports to be submitted to NSE Council.
Lomo Link: As we can see all over the city of Abuja, there are so many beautiful roads network, building structures, and landscape in place, apart from these, there are many other infrastructures on ground as you had mentioned, but something very vital still remains elusive, and that is maintenance culture. As the President of this great association, what do you think could be done in this important area? Engr. Shehu: Part of the vision/ mission is to advise government on how to run activity. In our society enough priorities are not given to this sector. Budgetary allocation is important for new projects and maintenance as sell, but our priorities on how our buildings and infrastructures are maintained are not good enough, but many organisations appoints facilities managers to handle these for them. One of the reasons why we run facility management course in our CPD (Continuous Professional Development) programme is to protect our structures and so on for continuity. NSE is a knowledge based industry, which is what keeps us on edge, and the reason why people keep up with us otherwise, we are not needed. Lomo Link: What is the membership figure of the Nigerian Society of Engineers? Engr. Shehu: Currently about 30,000 members.

Lomo Link: Your inaugural installation as the 28th President of Nigerian Society of Engineers comes up on Saturday the 11th February 2012, how do you feel about this? Engr. Shehu: To be honest, it is a great achievement, the Society cherishes this, NSE is if not the best, but one of the most democratic organisations in Nigeria. Two years in advance, you already know you are the next President. Before this, you will be deputy President, and before being the deputy you must have served as a Vice President for minimum of two years. Actually, the aim of the inaugural is to make society aware of the transition in the leadership. Also, to let the members have for them what kind of promise has the new leadership has for them, in other words how can he help them etc, this in a way embrace in the inaugural address of the New President.
Lomo Link: Finally, what is your advice for up coming engineers? E.g. Students engineers in Nigeria and diasporic engineers etc Engr. Shehu: My advice to all professionals- As young graduate, do your best to learn the profession very well, be honest so people can trust you; organisations will find you indispensable. What you need to succeed as a professional are: Competent and credibility, once you continue the two, sky is your limit, once one of the two is missing, you will be the first victim. Lomo Link: Once again sir, congratulations on your new position as the 28th President of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, we wish you a great tenure of office. Thanks for your time. Engr. Shehu: Thank You.

mazing success story of arguably the most notable and prominent Nigerian indigenous firstclass international restaurant and bar called 805; which seated comfortably on plot 93 Aminu Kano Crescent, Zone A7, Wuse 2 Abuja begun humbly from shop 805 which later incorporated shops 806 and 807 (all role in one) on Old Kent Road London. Apparently, this literally unfolds the rhetoric behind the name of this wonderful authentic African cuisine conglomerate. The attribute of perfection, extreme professionalism, and of course undiluted originality of Nigerian traditional food recipes served with natural spring mineral water, topped with request; exotic non-alcoholic and liquor drinks in deserving crystal clear glasses, are the unique selling point of 805, and on that platform it stands out from others within the hospitality industry.
They created an engineering process where they solicit and encouraged Nigerians overseas to come home to invest, and also bring their knowledge, experience and expertise from all works of life varying from politics, engineering, business and even hospitality like ours, for continual development. The owner infers Because we have taken the stress of catering off fellow Nigerians who just arrive from the airports with their luggages and they demand for 805 restaurants where they were advised good sumptuous food can be devour at affordable and worthy prices. There and then, this trust and respect of capability of good catering entrust in us gave us the nudge and impetus that it is time to go home for continuity of our service.
Having food for better living takes paramount position in the heart of the founders, it is one common believe that their eatery is the last bus stop for everyone when it comes to relishing African dishes at its peak with great savour. Interestingly, one faithful regular at Abuja branch said 805 is the only eatery where you have access to various kinds of African dishes and still enjoy a five star atmosphere and service you only get from Western Hotels and Continental Restaurants Another one in London said 805 Restaurant on Old Kent Road is still my favourite African restaurant in London. They serve all the classic dishes, presented to a high quality and the food is brilliant value. The location is very accessible by public transport or driving by car, with parking provided round the back At the time the idea of this avant-garde dinner home was cultivated twelve years ago, the primary vision is to cater for all and sundry especially Nigerians who live in the Diaspora; so they could have a touch of home anytime they are out away from home to relax and spoil themselves and their guest(s) a little. There is this optimum core slogan which describes London 805 as a place where East End meets the West End, the translation simply means all that is being served in the west end restaurants where the standard is high could at last be experienced at 805 situated ironically in the east end of London. Setting up Abuja multi-million dollar 805 Project was motivated by the forum initiated by Hon. Abike Dabiri, the diaspora committee chair person-led delegate from Nigerian National Assembly to the UK few years ago.
Abuja 805 establishes the evidence of hardwork put into practice by the brains behind the bistro venture. It is an unmissable immaculate white edifice looking so stately on its own, and could possibly be passed for a foreign mission building or a presidential villa if care is not taken. The inside radiates unreserved opulence dcor at its best; right from the entrance to the restaurants, lounge-bars, conference rooms, terrace bars, disco halls, toilets, corridors, very effective air-conditioning; suitable for tropical climate and many more. The security is superb, as you make your entry into the palatial premises, corporately well dressed Young men and ladies are on ground to meet, greet and usher you into a lifetime world of adventure; serenade with beautiful ambience classical music like Amadeus Mozart or Beethoven. They make you feel like a royal. Their presence signals instance security and protection which naturally beams an air of peace and tranquillity, and to crown it all; an everlasting relax mood while inside. The pillars behind this wonderful dream are no other personalities than the amiable; dapper; suave; and very unassuming gentleman Mr F rederick James famously known as Snr. F rederick James Esq. amidst his staff, peers, and patronage, and his soul-mate and wife Madam Damaris James. Together, they have served as beacon for Nigerians and other Africans in the diasporic world with their pivotal role in creating an enviable business dynasty in the world of leisure and hospitality. He reveals that profit proceeds from this venture was not their ultimate priority when they set up this thriving business, but rather make good food in a discerning atmosphere.

They both jointly believe extreme discharge of excellent stewardship at your duty post will surely bring enviable rewards on the long run. It is on the backdrops of this consciousness that they took the vision home. 805 International Restaurant and Bar has turned from a moderate investment to a world class multimillion dollar empire within its short period of existence, and according to The Jamess this is just the early phase of their own contribution towards leisure and hospitality which is a form of promoting Nigerian tourism at its height, especially from Diaspora perspective.
