Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North Community Support

What makes a great community is the care and support that residents give to each other and to maintaining their community. The City can't do everything but through working together with citizens, a lot can be accomplished. Kanata is a great part of the City of Ottawa because of its residents. Whether it is in raising funds for people with special needs, such as the wonderful event for Julianna Courneya and the upcoming garage sale by 9 year old Emily Tieu or pitching in to help through coaching a team or volunteering in so many other ways the community reaps the rewards. In 2000 Kanata won the community in bloom award because everyone did something to improve their neighbourhood. If we all do something, whether is picking up a piece of litter, adding a flower bed, removing graffiti or helping a neighbour, then everyone will benefit. I'd like to have your suggestions on making our Kanata communities even better. Heres' some things you can do now: When you go for a walk take a plastic bag with you to pick up any litter or recyclables and dispose of them in your garbage or recycle boxes. Take part in the 14th annual Spring Cleaning the Capital Campaign. Pick a street, or park, or school yard or trail and put together a group and clear out the litter or participate with one of our community associations. The City has many sponsors and will help by providing starter kits for those who register their project. Go to ottawa.ca and click on the Spring Cleaning box on the home page for information and to register. Register early to ensure you get a kit and to be eligible for great prizes. On Saturday, April 28th, Cleanup Day, even more prizes are available. A second Cleanup Day will be held in the Fall. Adopt a park or street. Take pride in your local area and show how you care. Individuals, groups or businesses can join the adopt program. Details are at: http://ottawa.ca/city_services/environment/community/adopt_en.html Reduce and reuse before you recycle. Rather than putting unwanted articles in the garbage donate them to a charity, hold a garage sale or give them away. I have submitted a motion for the next Council meeting to hold a citywide Give-Away Day in June. This has been done in Kanata before with many items passed to those who can use them rather than filling up our landfill sites. Watch for more details. Join a graffiti patrol. Morgan's Grant/Briarbrook now has one to remove graffiti in their community. I've asked the City to include training and help for community groups undertaking this work.

Start a Neighbourhood Watch Group on your street for neighbours to support neighbours. Volunteer by calling our local community police cente at 613-2361222 ext 2001. Apply for a Community Environmental Project Grant to improve your environment in areas such as waste disposal, water efficiency, wastewater management, water environmental protection, sustainable development, or climate issues. Applications must be submitted by May 25th. For information contact Onno Gaanderse at 613580-2424 ext 13364 Grants are also available for the Green Partnership Pilot Program (deadline June 15), and for community projects and crime prevention projects (deadline April 20). Details are on the city website at ottawa.ca/funding. These programs are important ways to help community organizations deal with issues in a manner that fits the individual community.

Animals and Development

Kanata North has many areas which animals call their home. Where development takes place, particularly if there is blasting, the animals are affected. As part of the development approval process a developer must prepare a Wildlife Protocol which are instructions on how to protect wildlife as construction proceeds. A protocol has been prepared for the Town Centre lands along Campeau Drive where servicing is now being done. This includes not removing trees between May 15th and July 10th when birds are breeding; using flexible construction fencing no more than 1.5 metres high (which deer can clear) and using noise to move animals prior to installing fencing; using breaks in the fencing at known deer paths to allow the deer to move out prior to blasting; and similar measures. Blasting in the area has stopped temporarily but will be starting again within 2 weeks.
