Thank you to all who came to the consultation on transit options on Mar. 6, despite the heavy snowfall on that day. From what I heard, residents would like the plan extended to areas outside of the Greenbelt with the timing of construction based on the population in each area. They generally liked the idea of extending the O-Train to the south as an interim measure. That detail was not included in the four staff options but I was promised that it would be added as an option to Plan 3. Having the O-Train extended would reduce both construction and operating costs in Plan 3, enabling more resources to be used for the downtown tunnel and east-west extensions. Most liked the idea of a tunnel downtown and planning a system from the core outwards. There was also general agreement on using a rail system. Although the plans were marked as LRT (light rail system is a modern streetcar system) there are four other urban train systems available which need to be evaluated. My preference is Plan 3 with an extension of the O-Train to the south as an interim step towards option 4. It will take roughly 5 years to do the necessary studies and construction for a downtown tunnel. As an immediate step, completion of the missing links in the transitway to the west, southwest and east can by done along with an extension of the O-Train and a provision for more park and rides. Please look at the options and let me know your views. A report on a selected model and type of train will come to committee in April, following which there will be further consultation with a Council decision coming by late May.
RECREATION COMPLEX
Public meetings on our new recreation complex have been confirmed for Mar. 25 at the Kinburn Client Service Centre in West Carleton and Apr. 10 at the Mlacak Centre in Kanata. During the meeting on the 10th, residents will be asked to develop the priorities to be included on the property. Information on the process is on my website along with a means of providing your views. Please submit your suggestions prior to Apr. 10 so they can be included that evening.

SNOW
Ottawa received 51 centimetres of snow last weekend, bringing the total accumulation over that week to 80 cm. With this much snow, it took all day Sunday to clear local roadways, with major roads having priority due to drifting snow. This impacted on transit and Para Transpo services on Sunday and resulted in a one-day delay in garbage and recycling collections. Ottawa has now received more than 400cm of snow this winter (4 metres) and may reach the record of 444 cm we had in 1970-71. The problems of visibility, clearing snow and others that we are now experiencing were even worse that year as there was no significant January thaw. Please take extra care in driving, walking or waiting for the bus. Watch for cars backing out of driveways with high snowbanks or at corners. Supervise your children and prevent them from digging dangerous tunnels or trenches that could collapse or be filled by passing snow removal equipment. When clearing snow, ensure that you dont block a fire hydrant or place snow on cleared roadways where it becomes a hazard. Park your cars off the roads as snow has narrowed them and emergency vehicles, school buses and snow removal equipment need to get through. And remember, Spring is coming!
