FROM THE DIRECTOR

All children are now back in school and the Library has much to offer. The Alabama Virtual Library (AVL), made possible by our State Legislature, is an outstanding resource for our students with over 10,000 databases of educational sources. All you need is an AVL card from the Library to have access. We also offer Homework Alabama online through tutor.com daily from 3:00 to 12:00 p.m. in the areas of math, English, history, and social studies. The help is live and experts are there to help you with difficult problems or questions. The Library also has multiple copies of books selected by the schools in our county for required reading. If you need to score high on standardized tests such as the SAT, PSAT, GRE, LSAT, and ASVAB, we have those materials too. Another great service we offer is Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services. If you are looking for a particular book and we dont have it, we can get the book through our ILL services free of charge. Just stop by the Library to see what all we do have for you. Visit our Web Page at www.odcpl.com to get a full listing of our services. September is Library Card Sign up Month, and your Library is the best friend you could ever have. And remember, everything is free of charge. In these tough economic times, take advantage of the free services we offer. Our motto is stated on the first page of our monthly Newsletter: The Library. . . where all you need is imagination and a Library card to enter a world of information. If you dont have a card, get one today.

From the Creel Richardson-Val McGee Room By Jocelyn Ross- Rayford The Ariton Universalist Church was declared an Alabama Historic Site and Landmark on March 23, 1990. This was three years before it was deeded to Ariton to be used as a Community Center. According to Ms. Mary Vic Paramore, acts of vandalism turned the beautiful old church into a place which was no longer enjoyable for the meetings, filled with the love and fellowship we had known. Deeding the church to the town was the decision of it members. This very beautiful, old style brick building is located on Atlantic Street, a quiet side street, near the school, in the downtown area within easy walking distance from most places in the community of Ariton. Fortunately, this church has been lovingly looked after, and written about through the years by Ms. Paramore, a retired Dale County teacher and local Historian. She wrote several articles about Aritons history. In Heritage of Dale County, she wrote, A few friends of Gods Universal love met at Mossy Grove Church, January 1, 1876 and organized themselves into a churchThe church was moved to Ariosta soon after the town was founded in 1890, and remained until a storm destroyed the building. According to The Ariton Alliance, a newspaper established in 1991 by Dr. Charles W. Gann, The first church was built just off Highway 11 in the Peters settlement of Mossy Grove. The (Universalist Church) old Cemetery is still there between County Highway 11 and Highway 231 SouthIn 1891, the church was moved to Ariosta near the site of the Universalist Cemetery. In 1913, after A storm blew this church down, a brick church was erected in the newly formed town of Ariton. It was dedicated December 7, 1913. The first minister was A.J. Strain, whose wife was the first postmaster of the new town. The church served the community until October 1984 when the minister Leonard Prater, retired because of failing health. After a group of interested citizens organized, raised funds, and repaired the church, it was again dedicated to service on December 7, 1993. Ms. Paramore wrote, Former members of this Church hope it can be made into a lovely place for the community to enjoy for many years to come. They will contribute when and as they can for the upkeep of the building. In the Heritage book she wrote, Due to the efforts of Dr. Sara Mac (Weed) Buttram and her husband Glenn, the church was placed on the Alabama Registry of Historical Buildings. Sources for Ms. Paramores writings are the Universalist Church Records, 1876-1984 and the Ariton Advertiser, 1913. Both are available in the Genealogy Section of this library; they contain valuable genealogical, as well as historical information.
