KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North Christmas season means helping those in our community

At this time of the year, there are many parties and celebrations. However, it is also a time when we should consider those who dont have the means to provide holiday fare for their family, those who are alone and lonely, and those who going through troubling times. There are many ways to reach out to help others. Adopt a family from the Kanata Food Cupboard and provide a feast and gifts for the family, give financial support to some of the many charities that support those in need, run a food drive (and do it at various times of the year as the need is year long), volunteer your time to help an organization, and teach your children about the joy of giving. Youll find out that you benefit greatly from doing this and will enjoy the season more than ever before.

Lansdowne
Well, the next stage has moved forward for Lansdowne Live. At the Lansdowne debate, the motion that I had prepared to ensure that the City benefited from any funds raised on an equal basis with the development group passed unanimously. The motion also included a financial penalty if the football team ceased to exist, included since much of the force to move on with Lansdowne results from the need for a stadium for the football franchise. The detailed motion can be seen on my website. Council also passed a number of motions relating to design. There now will be a public design competition for the open spaces, including the Aberdeen Pavillion and Horticultural Building. For the commercial development, the City, under a three-person design team, will control design. This will ensure both the type of development and how it fits into the local community fits the civic needs for the area. The City is also undertaking a major transportation study and an analysis of the retail projections. All of this will come together next June with a final report and plan.

Green Boxes
The recent reports on having a special charge for recycling black, blue and green boxes was a Committee recommendation that has not yet received council approval. I do not support the approach of the committee and many other councillors feel as I do. Once a decision has been made, Ill let you know the results.

Winter parking rules

Winter parking rules are in effect from now until April 1st. When there is a forecast of 7 cm of snow or more then on street parking is banned overnight. This enables the City to clear the snow overnight without the obstacle of cars on the street. The ban will continue until snow removal operations are complete, which sometimes takes several days. To ensure you dont receive a $70 ticket, sign up to receive an e-mail or Twitter notification for both the start of the restriction and when it is lifted at ottawa.ca/winterparking. This service is free. When snow removal is underway temporary no parking signs are posted and if you park, then the ticket is $90 and your car will be towed to a nearby street. Whenever possible, keep your vehicles off the street in winter for greater safety for all.

Help end violence against women

On Dec. 6, 20 years ago, 14 female engineering students were massacred at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. This year, the volunteers of the Peer Support Program at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre will hold a candlelight ceremony, with Sandra Blaikie as presenter, to honour them and all women who have fallen through senseless acts of violence. The ceremony starts at 5 p.m. on Dec. 6 in Hall D at the Mlacak Centre, 2500 Campeau Drive, Kanata, and will be followed by a reception.
